Here’s when the new 28 Years Later trilogy will bring back Cillian Murphy’s Jim
28 Years Later director Danny Boyle has disclosed the precise timeline for the return of Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, in the upcoming trilogy.
As the guy who brought Jim to life in Boyle’s 2002 apocalypse-themed horror flick, “28 Days Later,” I’ve been quite popular. But here’s a bittersweet piece of news: it seems I won’t be reprising my role for the upcoming sequel.
In conversation with IGN, Boyle detailed his blueprint for the trilogy, revealing that character Jim will feature again in the sequel titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” for the second installment, and potentially a third film if everything proceeds as planned.

In the initial part, Boyle mentioned that the characters across all three films would be interlinked. Notably, Spike, the protagonist of “28 Years Later,” portrayed by Alfie Williams, is a significant figure in the narrative’s unfolding.
According to Boyle, he plans to swiftly proceed through the movies without interruption. The first two films were filmed consecutively due to practicality, scheduling issues with actors, and for narrative purposes too. In essence, they are seamlessly connected.
Regarding the last movie in the trilogy, Boyle mentioned that Murphy is awaiting a call for a potential third film, contingent upon the success of the first two movies.
He mentioned that we haven’t secured funds for the third project as of now. The success of the first project will play a significant role in determining if we can proceed with it. If things go well, we hope to receive approval not only for the finances but also for the third project. Essentially, everyone is eagerly waiting for this decision, including Cillian.
Without disclosing the specific role of Murphy in “The Bone Temple,” screenwriter Boyle has announced that the esteemed actor from “Peaky Blinders” will join the cast, with the movie slated to hit theaters on January 16, 2026.
Regarding the second movie, Boyle mentioned that it will be directed by Nia DaCosta, following The Marvels. He jokingly added, “I won’t say much more or else I might get in trouble.
Previously, Boyle had stated that Murphy wouldn’t feature in the initial movie of the upcoming trilogy. However, he is involved behind the scenes as an executive producer.
28 Years Later is released in cinemas on 20 June, 2025.
