Here’s what’s coming in the fifth episode of House of the Dragon season 2, shot by shot

As a longtime fan of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and HBO’s Game of Thrones adaptation, I have grown accustomed to the complex and intriguing world of Westeros. House of the Dragon, the new prequel series based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, offers a fresh perspective by focusing on the early Targaryen dynasty.

I’m currently midway through the second season of “House of the Dragon,” and I must admit, I’m left pondering what lies ahead. The Dance of the Dragons isn’t over yet, and its next phase remains a tantalizing enigma to me. Will Aemond Targaryen assert his newfound power on the Iron Throne in a bold and ruthless manner now that he’s taken his brother Aegon’s place, who is recuperating from injuries inflicted partly by Aemond? How will Queen Rhaenyra respond to this unexpected turn of events? The intrigue just keeps mounting!

Instead of trying to unravel the secrecy, let’s examine the intricacies of the forthcoming episode 6 in season 2. Take a peek at it here, and afterward, we’ll bring out our magnifying glasses for a closer inspection.

The scene begins in a dimly lit cave, home to the dragons residing on Dragonstone island. Recall that in the last episode, Rhaenyra and her son Jace contemplated an unprecedented plan: inviting Targaryen relatives from minor houses to attempt riding the unmounted dragons on Dragonstone. “No one has ever tried this before,” Rhaenyra remarks. However, with the pressing need to secure victory in the ongoing war, she is compelled to explore this innovative solution.

In the upcoming episode of “House of the Dragon,” we’ll see an increased number of small council meetings.

I understand that claiming a dragon comes with the grave risk of losing one’s life, as Rhaenyra puts it. But imagine this: not only do you get to brave such an adventure, but also soar through the clouds on the back of your magnificent, loyal friend – a dragon! Is that not an exhilarating prospect? The potential danger is certainly worth the experience of flying in the vast, open sky.

In this scene, we observe Rhaenyra, Jace, and an unidentified dragon caretaker with their backs turned to us. A significant moment is anticipated to unfold at Dragonstone’s counterpart of the Dragonpit.

“Perhaps the gods will favor us,” Rhaenyra says as the camera dramatically spins around her:

Simultaneously, Daemon, Rhaenyra’s husband, faces challenges at Harrenhal’s ruins in the Riverlands as he struggles to rally troops. It’s possible that the deities (or the narrative) are meting out retribution for his attempts to seize Rhaenyra’s throne. In the following passage, Daemon engages in conversation with a woman presumed to be Alys Rivers, the enigmatic witch with whom he has recently grown close:

Daemon hasn’t fared well in the Riverlands, but there’s concern that he could pose a problem if he gains more power. According to Criston Cole, who represents Aegon, the current king’s half-brother, “If Daemon becomes powerful in the Riverlands, I won’t have enough forces left to confront him.” While Aegon is recovering from grievous injuries suffered at the Battle of Rook’s Rest, his brother Aemond stands in as regent.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed a scene where Criston is depicted riding a horse. He seems contemplative and could be preparing to leave King’s Landing once more. The figure nearby the camera, shrouded in mist, might very well be Alicent, Aegon’s mother, with whom Criston had an intense relationship. Their current animosity suggests that their affair may have ended.

Regarding the threat posed by Daemon, Aemond remains unfazed. He declares, “My uncle presents an intriguing opposition for me, should he choose to confront me.”

In the following images, it seems Daemon is wandering through Harrenhal’s godswood. The Gods Eye lake lies beyond him, a significant location that plays a role in the story later on.

More family drama on House of the Dragon

In my opinion, the most engaging parts of the season have been centered around the Green family’s turmoil. Previously, I brought up how King Aegon was wounded during the Battle of Rook’s Rest. What I failed to share is that his injuries were predominantly caused by his own brother Aemond, who is currently visiting the ailing monarch in his sickroom.

Based on my own experiences and observations, I believe this visit will not be a typical “get well soon” one. Instead, it seems more like a stern warning for the person to stay in bed if they value their health and wellbeing. This assessment comes from having seen similar situations where pushing oneself too hard during recovery only setbacks the progress made.

Just as any caring mother, Alicent would likely be against her sons taking each other’s lives. However, it seems they’ve reached a dangerous point. Trying to prevent their brotherly feud from escalating into fatal violence now. “You exhibit an overconfidence typical of your age,” she says to Aemond. “Have the humiliations of your past not yet been adequately avenged?”

Aemond bears the traits of a hurt and vulnerable child, yet harbors desires for honor and retaliation within him. It seems challenging to convey such messages to him effectively.

At Dragonstone, Rhaenyra continues her strolls in and around the Dragonpit. A few dragons reside on the island unridden, among them Silverwing, Vermithor from the finale of the first season, and Seasmoke, previously ridden by her late husband Laenor.

As a longtime fan of the intricate world of Game of Thrones, I’ve come to understand that dragons are not tamed easily. Having witnessed the deep bond between riders and their fearsome beasts, I can attest that it is no simple feat to claim a dragon as one’s mount.

In a powerful show, Rhaenyra picks up a sword and gives it a practice thrust:

I feel like I need to prove my leadership to them. With the emblem of power, the shield and the sword, as my constant companions. In this endless battle for respect.

The Lannister army rides!

For some time now, there have been reports that Jason Lannister, who holds the title of lord over Casterly Rock during this particular era, is leading an army of soldiers towards the Riverlands. Dedicated to King Aegon and the Greens, Jason Lannister intends to engage in battle against Rhaenyra. Given his destination, it’s a safe assumption that he is preparing for a confrontation with Daemon.

I’ve been keeping a distance from Daemon ever since our heated argument in episode two, but with my adversaries gaining ground, I find myself in dire need of reinforcements. My son Jace tried to console me by reminding me of the formidable power of the Greens’ armies. But he was wrong; what I truly long for is Daemon by my side.

In the last episode, I found myself sending Ser Alfred Broome as a messenger to Harrenhal on Rhaenyra’s behalf, in an attempt to open lines of communication with Daemon. With so much weighing on my mind, it’s crucial for me to keep trying to find peace and resolve conflicts whenever possible.

Corlys Velaryon, previously married to Rhaenys Targaryen and now serving as Rhaenyra’s new advisor, has made his way back to Dragonstone. His thoughts are preoccupied with various concerns.

Rhaenyra is not without supporters, yet Daemon’s commitment is uncertain. She anxiously hopes he will change his stance, but for the time being, she feels compelled to act as if she’s on her own.

I’m excited to follow up on Rhaena Targaryen, Daemon’s daughter, who currently resides in the Vale, caring for Rhaenyra’s little ones. Suddenly, her gaze shifts towards something intriguing off-camera. Could it be a dragon, as some whispers suggest?

I, Rhaenyra, often seek counsel from my trusted spymaster, Mysaria. Her insight and intelligence have proven invaluable in the brief moments we’ve shared on screen.

In a soft yet assertive tone, I admit, “I’m the one to blame for your lack of fear towards me.” To whom this statement escapes the screen, remains a mystery even to me, as if the trailer intentionally keeps their identity hidden.

In the following scene, Daemon can be seen at Harrenhal, possibly experiencing another disturbing dream; the iron spikes of the Iron Throne seem to be nearby and in sharp focus. However, it appears as if Rhaenyra is conversing with him in this shot, but I believe that’s just an optical illusion.

A mob runs amok in King’s Landing

In the final burst of images, we return to King’s Landing and the Great Sept:

The previous occasion when Alicent and Rhaenya rode amongst the populace was following the tragic demise of Rhaenya’s son, Jaehaerys. Initially, the commoners expressed their condolences. However, Corlys Velaryon’s city blockade has led to a scarcity of food and trade, leaving the citizens discontented. To add fuel to the fire, an instigator was sent by Mysaria, causing unrest amongst the masses. It remains unclear why Alicent and Rhaenya are back amongst the commoners, but it seems they have come to wish they hadn’t: [

In our last group of pictures, we go back to Rhaenyra, Jace, and the dragon keepers at Dragonstone’s dragon lair. (Instead of using “dragon” multiple times in one sentence, let’s call it a “dragon lair” or simply “pit” for brevity.)

In the end, there is a dragon identified as Seasmoke emerging from the depths to confront Rhaenyra directly.

As a gamer, I’ve seen the latest House of the Dragon trailer, but it didn’t reveal much new information for me. We already knew that Rhaenyra and Jace were planning to recruit new dragonriders, Aemond and Aegon had their issues, the Lannisters were advancing towards the Riverlands, and Daemon was attempting to raise an army at Harrenhal. So, I’m eagerly waiting for this Sunday night, July 21, when HBO and Max will air the next episode, to discover what exciting twists and turns await us in House of the Dragon’s intriguing world.
