Here’s the reason A Sign of Affection has such detailed lips
As a dedicated fan of anime, I have seen my fair share of romantic series, but none have left me as captivated and moved as “A Sign of Affection.” This shojo masterpiece follows the heartwarming story of Yuki, a deaf university student, and her blossoming relationship with the charming Itsuomi.
A Sign of Affection never fails to reduce me to giggles and hair twirling. The romantic shojo series follows Yuki, a deaf university student, who meets the charming Itsuomi, a fellow student with a passion for studying languages. The two are immediately smitten, and eventually a romantic relationship blossoms between them (and this being a romance anime, other characters also start dealing with their own crushes and relationships and what not).
As a long-time anime enthusiast with a soft spot for romance stories, I’ve watched my fair share of sweet and heartwarming shows. But none have left me as captivated as this latest addition to my watchlist. The adorable moments and swoon-worthy confessions are certainly a draw, but what keeps me coming back for more is the exquisite attention to detail in the animation – specifically, the lips.
In contrast to other anime, this show’s characters have exceptionally detailed and well-defined lips. They are drawn with care, featuring highlights and shading that make them pop. From the moment the opening credits began, I found myself fixated on their full, vividly pink forms. Initially, I was perplexed by this design choice, which aligns with the manga. However, upon further reflection, I came to understand its significance.
In this series, the lips are meticulously depicted because that’s how the leading character perceives the world. Unfortunately, a large number of people in Yuki’s life, including her mother, do not know sign language. As a result, she relies heavily on lip-reading to communicate. Given that the show is primarily presented from Yuki’s perspective, it’s only natural that the lips receive close attention. To forge connections with others, she needs to scrutinize their mouths carefully in order to discern what they’re saying and text back her replies on her phone.
Yuki appears content with the current situation. However, Itsuomi breaks this routine by showing genuine enthusiasm for learning sign language. He’s a globetrotter who relishes new experiences, yet his motivation for mastering sign language transcends the desire to acquire another language. Instead, it is driven by a heartfelt yearning to bridge the gap between him and Yuki. Itsuomi puts in significant time and energy to ensure accuracy in his signing, making this a powerful symbol of their deepening bond.
His lips, among the softest and prettiest in the production, boast a delicate baby pink hue with a hint of emphasis. Yuki is intently listening to every word.
All episodes of A Sign of Affection are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
