Here’s how you can stream Gene Hackman’s best movie right now in the UK
Currently streaming in the UK is one of Gene Hackman’s standout movies, a five-time Oscar winner.
Yesterday’s news confirmed the passing away of a renowned actor, aged 95, along with his wife Betsy Arakawa, who was 63, and their pet dog, in their residence in Santa Fe.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hackman has taken on a variety of significant roles. These include performances in films like Unforgiven, The Royal Tenenbaums, Mississippi Burning, Superman, and The Conversation.
He also appeared in The French Connection, which you can watch right now on Disney+.
1971’s neo-noir film, directed by William Friedkin, narrates the story of detectives Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (played by Hackman) and Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (portrayed by Roy Schneider). Their mission is to dismantle a French drug syndicate headed by Doyle’s long-time adversary, Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey).
The film titled “The French Connection” received a total of eight Oscar nominations and was successful in winning five awards, among them the categories Best Picture and Best Actor, which were given to Hackman.
This movie is frequently found among the top movies ever made, and in 2005, it was enshrined in the U.S. National Film Registry as it holds “significant cultural, historical, or artistic value.
In 1975, the sequel titled “The French Connection II” hit the screens, featuring the return of Hackman and Rey as they reprised their roles from the previous movie. This time, their character Doyle journeyed to Marseille in pursuit of Charnier, a criminal who had eluded justice at the end of the first film.
Previously, Hackman himself admitted that he had watched the highly successful film “The French Connection” just one time.
He shared with IndieWire that it’s been half a century since his last watch of the movie, which was during its initial showing in a dimly lit, compact screening room at a post-production company’s site.
I’m uncertain about any enduring impact the movie might have, as it appeared to me at the time as a respectful portrayal of a police officer skillfully thwarting an ambitious criminal family’s efforts to penetrate the illicit drug underworld in New York.
After the news of Hackman and Arakawa’s passing, reports suggest that there’s no indication of suspicious circumstances, however, the exact cause of their demise remains unknown at this time.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza of Santa Fe County reassured The Santa Fe New Mexican, stating: “I aim to comfort the community and surrounding areas by saying that currently, there’s no imminent threat to anyone.
In the year 1991, Hackman got married, having previously divorced Faye Maltese, his former partner who bore him three children named Christopher Allen, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne.
