Here we go again: Disney is working on a new Star Wars movie trilogy
As a long-time cinephile who has weathered the tumultuous seas of Hollywood’s ever-changing tides, I must say that this latest bit of “Star Wars” news leaves me both hopeful and skeptical. On one hand, the prospect of Simon Kinberg helming a new trilogy is intriguing, given his past successes in the sci-fi genre. However, as someone who has seen more than a few promising projects get buried under the sands of Tatooine, I can’t help but feel a twinge of trepidation.
Two well-respected news sources, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, have shared similar reports about a breaking Star Wars story, with minor differences: both sources confirm that Disney has brought on Simon Kinberg, renowned for his work on Fox’s X-Men films and the creation of Star Wars Rebels, to pen a new trilogy of Star Wars movies. However, the details provided by each source differ. Deadline suggests that this upcoming trilogy will serve as the next installment in the “Skywalker Saga” and will continue the story directly from Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which concluded with lead character Rey assuming the title “Rey Skywalker.” On the other hand, The Hollywood Reporter states that this trilogy is intentionally not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga but instead will introduce fresh characters and a new narrative, aiming to guide the franchise into unexplored territory.
But both sources say that it exists, which is something. Now is the moment where I point out that Disney has announced and then shelved lots of Star Wars movie projects in the past several years, including movies from directors Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins as well as movie trilogies from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss. All of those were either announced or reported to be in development, and all of them look like they’re dead in the water. There’s no guarantee that this new trilogy won’t meet the same fate.
Furthermore, let me clarify that Disney isn’t officially announcing a new Star Wars trilogy; instead, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter have obtained information from sources (possibly multiple ones with contradictory details) prematurely. It’s plausible that Disney has been secretly working on this project in the background, but then decided it might not be worth pursuing further, thus letting it potentially fade away. It’s understandable to have reservations about more Star Wars content, but considering the information was leaked unintentionally, it seems unfair to judge so hastily. Moreover, if Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter are receiving conflicting details, it suggests the project isn’t very advanced in development.
If this proposed trilogy does indeed continue, I believe THR’s narrative fits well. We are aware that Disney is already producing a Star Wars movie, which will build upon the events of the sequel trilogy and bring Daisy Ridley back as Rey. In such a scenario, creating another sequel trilogy might seem redundant. Instead, I’d prefer to explore something fresh in a new Star Wars movie.
Currently, the upcoming Star Wars TV series on Disney+ is titled “Skeleton Crew,” set to premiere on December 3. This series centers around a group of youngsters who find themselves stranded aboard a starship and must navigate their way back home. Simultaneously, in cinemas, Disney continues to develop “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” a sequel to the popular TV show “The Mandalorian.” The new film is slated for release in 2026.
