Henry Cavill’s Highlander Reboot Rumored Plot Teases What to Expect

Chad Stahelski, the director of *John Wick*, is starting work on a new project for the movies. The film has faced several delays, but fans of the action-packed fantasy series now have reason to be excited.

Details about the upcoming *Highlander* remake, starring Henry Cavill (*Man of Steel, The Witcher*) and potentially Zendaya (*Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune*), have been kept secret. However, a summary of the plot has recently emerged, reported by SF Gazette and scooper Daniel Richtman. While Amazon and MGM’s United Artists haven’t officially confirmed anything, the summary suggests the new film will raise the stakes even higher for the character of Connor MacLeod compared to the original 1986 movie.

According to Ritchman, the movie *Highlander* tells the story of Connor MacLeod, an immortal warrior who first died centuries ago in Scotland. He’s now living a peaceful life, but is troubled by past losses and the ongoing, violent conflict between immortals. When the dangerous immortal Kurgan reappears, supported by a group trying to discover the key to immortality, Connor is pulled back into ‘The Game’ – an age-old battle where only one immortal can ultimately survive.

With guidance from his mentor Ramírez and the help of archaeologist Kate Bennett, Connor needs to face his history and find new meaning in his life. As immortals fight each other throughout time and around the world, their struggle for the enigmatic ‘Prize’ turns into a fight for the very future of humankind.

Henry Cavill will star as Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander who learns he’s an immortal warrior. Dave Bautista will play The Kurgen, the film’s primary villain. Karen Gillan will portray MacLeod’s wife, a mortal Scottish woman. Djimon Hounsou will play another immortal warrior, originating from Africa, and also serves as a main antagonist as the leader of The Watchers, a group that monitors immortals. Marisa Abela will play MacLeod’s love interest in the present day. Russell Crowe will also appear in the film as Ramirez.

Henry Cavill injured himself while preparing for the film, but is now recovering. He shared a photo on Instagram showing his leg in a brace, with a message about resilience: “Endure. In enduring, grow strong.”

Highlander Director Talks ‘Big’ Action in His Reboot

He explained they’re updating a story originally set in the Scottish Highlands of the 1500s, relocating it to modern New York and Hong Kong to see how audiences respond. He believes the project offers exciting action sequences and a unique character to portray, along with a surprising love story. He also mentioned that his experience working on *John Wick* taught him how to creatively shape narratives and build a new kind of myth.

Stahelski explained how he convinced Henry Cavill to star in *Highlander*. He told Cavill the role offered a unique opportunity to play a character with a vast emotional range – someone who’s lived for over 500 years and never wanted the life they’ve been given. The role also allowed for showcasing a character with centuries of martial arts training and experience in many different fighting styles.

There’s no confirmed release date for the new *Highlander* movie, but it likely won’t be in theaters until 2027 or 2028.
