He’s a very popular actor right now with several exciting projects coming up. While he’s starred in many huge successes, he’s also had a few films that didn’t do as well, such as Argylle.
Henry Cavill starred in the spy thriller Argylle in 2024, a film aiming for the James Bond feel. While the movie had an interesting idea, it didn’t do well in theaters. However, Argylle is now proving popular with audiences on Apple TV, becoming a streaming hit according to FlixPatrol.
The spy movie Argylle has been popular for several days, currently ranking seventh on Apple TV’s global Top 10 list. It’s also the number one movie in countries like Portugal, Switzerland, Norway, and the Netherlands.
While Argylle is gaining attention, Henry Cavill’s 2019 film is also popular, currently ranking seventh on Paramount+.
Argylle Should’ve Started a Franchise
Argylle, a new action movie, started as a separate story from the popular Kingsman films. It was directed by Matthew Vaughn, who also directed the Kingsman movies, and written by Jason Fuchs. The film is based on a novel by Elly Conway, who wasn’t a published author when the movie was released.
The movie likely benefited from existing buzz, despite reports denying rumors about it. Building on a well-loved franchise and a popular director, Argylle also boasted a cast full of famous actors.
The film featured a star-studded cast including Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. However, despite all that talent, the movie wasn’t successful.
Argylle centers around Elly Conway, a novelist who prefers to stay out of the public eye. Her quiet life is turned upside down when she discovers her fictional spy stories are predicting actual events, and she’s rescued from an attack by a real-life secret agent.
Argylle cost a massive $200 million to make, but it didn’t earn that much back. While the film made $94.9 million worldwide – a decent amount for a spy movie – when you include the costs of making and marketing it, the studio lost over $200 million.
Argylle Deserves a Second Chance
In 2021, plans were announced for Argylle to be the start of a film series with at least three movies, a plan confirmed in March 2022. Director Vaughn hinted that the second film would actually tell the story before the first movie, adapting the events of the original Argylle novel. This was confirmed in a scene after the credits. In February 2024, Vaughn confirmed the prequel was being developed, and it will feature Louis Partridge as Argylle – a character previously played by Henry Cavill in the first film.
Given the film’s poor performance in cinemas, it’s doubtful there will be any sequels.
The film received a disappointing 33% rating based on available reviews. One critic gave it a 70% score, finding it enjoyable despite feeling it was too long.
Argylle is available to stream on Apple TV.
