Henry Cavill wanted to play Kaladin in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive adaptation

As a dedicated fan of both Henry Cavill and Brandon Sanderson, I find myself captivated by their shared passion for all things fantastical. Cavill’s commitment to portraying complex characters in the realm of mythology is evident in his work on The Witcher and upcoming projects like Highlander and Warhammer. On the other hand, Sanderson’s masterful storytelling has earned him a place among the pantheon of modern fantasy greats, with the upcoming release of Wind and Truth in the Stormlight Archive series.

As a cinephile with a soft spot for all things fantastical, I can’t help but admire Henry Cavill’s knack for finding roles that suit his passion: witness his captivating portrayal in “The Witcher” or his upcoming ventures in “Highlander” and “Warhammer.” On the literary front, Brandon Sanderson, a contemporary fantasy writer whose work is highly sought after, is set to release another installment in his “Stormlight Archive” series titled “Wind and Truth” later this year.

It’s not surprising that Cavill appreciates Sanderson’s work. In a recent interview on the Instagram fan page @cosmere_junkie, Sanderson revealed that Cavill once called him out of the blue and asked about playing Kaladin, one of the main characters in The Stormlight Archive, in a potential adaptation of those books.

In a world known as Roshar, where relentless storms are the norm, resides a character named Kaladin who serves both as a warrior and a leader. At first glance, it might seem that Henry Cavill would be an ideal choice for this role. However, there are complications. As Sanderson recalled, when Cavill asked if he was too old for the part, Sanderson agreed and added that Cavill is also of a different ethnicity.

Sanderson expressed that receiving the call was exciting, even though he and Cavill understood it wasn’t an ideal match. As Sanderson recalled, “He had read the books and knew it wouldn’t suit him, but it was somewhat sad when he phoned me. He said something like, ‘Dude, I don’t think I can play Kaladin, can I?’ To which I replied, ‘I’m afraid not.’

Some fans seem unbothered by the fact that Cavill doesn’t match the age or ethnicity typically associated with the character. “I don’t mind if it deviates from the storyline. If Henry is cast as Kal, I’m all for it!” says Instagram user @scottllyx in a popular comment on the video.

Regarding Sanderson, it’s clear he has reservations about Hollywood adaptations of his works, as we’ve previously covered. This indicates his determination to handle Stormlight Archive appropriately, which unfortunately involves looking for an actor other than Cavill for the main role.

It’s fortunate for us fans that Sanderson also expressed eagerness to team up with Cavill in the future: “I’m confident I’ll join forces with Henry on a project at some time. He’s a great individual, a dedicated geek, and produces exciting work.

It’s exciting to imagine the potential collaborations between two well-known figures in their respective domains – a renowned fantasy author and an endearing, charismatic actor known for his nerdiness. The outcomes could be fascinating!

Could it be that a “Mistborn” adaptation is on the horizon for them? It’s exciting to imagine Henry Cavill portraying Kelsier. For the moment, we’ll only speculate, but we’re definitely looking forward to seeing more!
