Henry Cavill Turned Down 300 Role to Focus on James Bond Audition
At one point, Henry Cavill was infamously referred to as Hollywood’s most unfortunate actor. In quick succession, he missed out on prominent roles like Superman, Batman, and James Bond. Incredibly, he also declined a leading part in another blockbuster movie in 2006, choosing instead to prepare for the possibility of portraying James Bond in Casino Royale. Regrettably, that role went to Daniel Craig as well.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder what might have been for Henry Cavill. His recent career shifts, such as stepping away from the iconic role of Superman in James Gunn’s DCU reboot and the tumultuous behind-the-scenes events surrounding his work on The Witcher, have sparked discussions about his fortune. Perhaps his star could have ascended more swiftly had he accepted a role in Zack Snyder’s 2007 action epic, the memorable 300.
I was really bummed out when I didn’t make the cut for the Bond role. In fact, I had declined a main part in ‘300’, as I was up against Daniel Craig for it. Preparing for the Bond audition consumed all my attention.
Henry Cavill’s ‘James Bond’ Audition Tape Was Released Recently
A video from Henry Cavill’s tryout for the role of James Bond – a part he ultimately lost to Daniel Craig – was recently unveiled. Though some believe that Cavill possesses all the essential qualities for an exceptional 007, others were taken aback by his seemingly insufficient charisma and somewhat stiff performance in the clip.
Regarding the film “300,” directed by Zack Snyder, it remains one of his most controversial works but is widely recognized as one of his finest. The captivating portrayal of the Spartan leader Leonidas was delivered masterfully by Gerard Butler. Given that Leonidas is an older character, it’s interesting to consider that Henry Cavill, who was relatively young at the time, might have been more suited for a younger role like Astinos, played in the movie by Tom Wisdom. The film’s iconic slow-motion sequences and Snyder’s signature style, along with Larry Fong’s spectacular cinematography, breathe life into Frank Miller’s comic book, making it easy to envision Henry Cavill alongside Butler on the battlefield.
Though I declined the offer to play the lead in “300”, I eventually teamed up with Zack Snyder for “Man of Steel”, “Batman v Superman”, and “Justice League”. Some fans still believe I should continue as the emblematic superhero in the DC cinematic universe. Henry Cavill has a host of significant upcoming projects, including Guy Ritchie’s action thriller “In the Grey”; Amazon’s live-action adaptation of the beloved 80s cartoon, “Voltron”; and the long-awaited reboot of “Highlander”, directed by Chad Stahelski, who brought us “John Wick”.
