Hello Simon, my old friend: Art Garfunkel in ‘a wonderful place’ with estranged bandmate
As a cinema devotee who has spent countless hours immersed in the tales of friendship and estrangement between iconic duos like Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, Laurel and Hardy, and Rick and Ilsa, I find the rekindling of Simon & Garfunkel’s bond to be a heartwarming tale that resonates deeply. It seems to me, much like the bittersweet ending of Casablanca, that these two musicians have finally realized the value of their unique partnership and are striving to make amends before it’s too late.
Art Garfunkel shares that he’s working on renewing the relationship with his longtime partner in Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon, following years of intermittent strife between them.
83-year-old singer Garfunkel spoke about his past collaboration with Simon in a recent interview, sharing that he had tears in his eyes during their reunion over lunch. He stated, “It was the first time we’d met in years. I looked at Paul and asked, ‘What changed? Why haven’t we been in touch?'” Garfunkel shared this sentiment with The Times (U.K.) in an interview published on Sunday.
During the late ’60s and early ’70s, these two musicians gained significant recognition for their work with Simon & Garfunkel. They were particularly renowned for hits like “The Sound of Silence,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and “Mrs. Robinson.” However, despite their growing fame and seven Grammy awards, the duo parted ways following a contentious split in 1970.
Ever since then, the musicians have maintained a tumultuous bond, intermittently collaborating only for select reunion performances throughout the years. As per Garfunkel, Simon, who is now 83, has been upset about an “earlier interview in which I made certain comments.
Garfunkel admitted he shed tears upon hearing about the pain he caused. In retrospect, it seems like he was trying to break free from the ‘gentle’ image associated with Simon & Garfunkel.
In 2015, Garfunkel spoke candidly to The Telegraph about the disbandment of Simon & Garfunkel. He lamented their decision to prematurely abandon their “fortunate position atop the world,” and during the interview, he made it clear that he needed some distance from Simon, referring to him as a “fool” and a “jerk.
In hindsight, I wish I’d given Paul a break, as his antics were starting to grate on me. Back then, I admitted that his jokes had lost their charm. Fast-forwarding to this year, I shared with The Telegraph in September that I genuinely miss Paul.
Despite not clarifying to The Times if his issue stemmed from Simon’s critical remarks in 2015, Garfunkel confessed to The Times, “I made a mistake.
The artist-lyricist, unveiling a fresh album alongside his 33-year-old son Art Garfunkel Junior, further disclosed a future reunion with partner Simon. They shared that their recent lunch discussion centered around mending fences before it’s too late.
He mentioned, “It seemed as though we had returned to an enchanting location. Reflecting on it now brings tears to my eyes. I can still sense the warmth of his embrace.
