‘Helldivers’ Movie Casts Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa, known for his roles in action films, is set to star in a movie based on the popular video game Minecraft. This isn’t a typical video game adaptation where he’ll be battling pixelated creatures. Sony Pictures is actively developing projects based on its well-known franchises, and this new film is based on the globally successful Minecraft. Fans who have been hoping for a movie similar to Starship Troopers might find this project to be exactly what they’ve been waiting for.

Jason Momoa will star in a movie based on the popular video game Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin (known for Fast Five). The film, a project from PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures, is scheduled for release on November 10, 2027. The Helldivers franchise gained huge popularity with the original game in 2015, and even more so with the critically acclaimed Helldivers 2 in 2024. The game is a fast-paced sci-fi adventure where players work together to complete missions on alien worlds, fighting robots and giant bugs while spreading “freedom.”

The game Helldivers draws heavily from the 1997 sci-fi action film Starship Troopers, a movie now considered a cult classic. Like the film, Helldivers offers a satirical look at fascism and the military, but with its own unique take. In the game, up to three players work together to defend “Super Earth” from alien threats on faraway planets, using powerful weapons and gear to destroy everything in their path. Given the game’s intense and action-filled gameplay, it’s likely any movie adaptation will try to show both the difficulties faced by the characters and the satirical elements of the story.
