Helldivers 2’s Escalation of Freedom update adds a new difficulty level

As a long-time fan of Helldivers and a seasoned veteran of the Helldives, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as Arrowhead Game Studios prepares to drop the Escalation of Freedom update for Helldivers 2. With new challenges comes new adversaries, and I’ve got my heart set on outsmarting these fresh threats that await me on the battlefield.

At Helldivers 2’s latest announcement by Arrowhead Game Studios, I can’t help but feel a tinge of apprehension over the upcoming introduction of challenging new bugs and robotic foes that we’ll encounter on the battlefield. The Escalation of Freedom update, the most extensive yet for Helldivers 2, brings a host of significant enhancements. These include a heightened level of difficulty, fresh biomes to explore, an assortment of new adversaries, and numerous improvements to gameplay mechanics.

Players can take on challenging missions referred to as “Super Helldives” with a difficulty level of 10. In these runs, they’ll encounter massive bot fortresses, endless hordes of enemies, and commensurate rewards. Additionally, various new objectives will be integrated into other difficulty levels, such as caring for a bug larva in a backpack – think of it as a blend between “Death Stranding” and an action game, where instead of constructing roads and delivering goods, you’re dodging Bile Titans and avoiding Stalkers.

In your encounter, you’ll face some fresh adversaries to deal with. The formidable Impaler, an infamous foe from the initial Helldivers, will join forces with the Terminids. Instead of the typical approach players employ against insects, which is a run-and-gun strategy, the Impaler poses a significant challenge by burrowing underground and emerging with menacing tentacles. To add to the complexity, a new type of Charger has emerged: the Spore Charger, who hides in fog before launching an attack. Lastly, the Brood Commander will now be accompanied by a more formidable adversary, the Terminid Alpha Commander.

The Automatons will receive an upgrade, complete with a new Rocket Tank. Hints of further robot reinforcements from Arrowhead are intriguing, but details are still kept under wraps. Let’s hope the newly discovered black holes won’t bring any unwelcome consequences; it seems unlikely they’ll cause significant trouble down the line.

An improvement in the quality-of-life aspects of the game stands out significantly: it puts an end to unwelcome disconnections. At present, a player can unexpectedly eject an unwitting teammate from the game, resulting in no rewards for that teammate – this is a malicious act known as griefing. However, with the new update, if a player gets kicked out of the game, they will start a fresh session as the host and retain all the accumulated loot from the previous game. Further adjustments are on the way, including modifications to the social menu, but this alteration addresses one of the most aggravating problems in the game.

Escalation of Freedom is set to release on August 6 on both PC and PlayStation 5.
