Helen Mirren calls out James Bond franchise for “profound sexism”

Helen Mirren has called out the James Bond franchise for its “profound sexism”.

Prior to the premiere of her upcoming crime series titled “MobLand”, Dame Judi Dench spoke candidly to The Standard regarding her acting partner, Pierce Brosnan.

The duo are preparing for their roles in the upcoming series by Guy Ritchie, set to debut on Paramount+ this coming Sunday (30th of March).

In the recently launched crime drama, Mirren and Brosnan portray a power couple, Conrad and Maeve Harrigan, who run a formidable criminal empire based in London as husband and wife.

Speaking candidly about working with Brosnan, famously recognized as James Bond in the ’90s and the early ’00s, Mirren expressed that she had not been an admirer of the James Bond film series.

As a die-hard admirer, I must confess that I was never a strong advocate for Bond, at least not in his portrayal by Pierce Brosnan. To put it simply, he’s my hero! His charm is undeniable, and he truly shines in the film MobLand. Yet, what makes him stand out even more is his exceptional character off-screen. He’s just an amazing individual to work alongside. Similarly, Daniel Craig, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, is another remarkable person. He too exudes warmth and graciousness, making it a joy to know him.

To be completely honest, the entire James Bond series didn’t resonate with me. It just didn’t. I’ve never been a fan of James Bond, and his portrayal of women throughout the series has always left me feeling uncomfortable.

In her discussion about historic females connected with the Secret Service, Mirren expressed her disagreement with a female James Bond character. Instead, she advocated for sharing the authentic tales of these remarkable women.

She stated that the James Bond character has roots deeply entwined with an old-fashioned perspective on gender roles. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that women have consistently played pivotal roles in covert operations, demonstrating immense bravery and significance throughout the Secret Service’s history.

If you learn about the bravery of women during the French Resistance, their courage is nothing short of astounding and hard to believe. Therefore, I’d like to share genuine accounts of exceptionally brave women who played significant roles in that realm.

MobLand will premiere on Paramount+ on March 30.
