Helen Mirren, 79, Urges Midlifers to Embrace Ageing and Exercise – Here’s How!
Actress Helen Mirren advises individuals approaching middle age not to dread growing older, instead urging them to welcome physical activity as a part of the aging process.
The 79-year-old actress said people should make ‘little changes now to help them later in life’.
The Oscar winner pointed out that it doesn’t necessarily require signing up for a gym membership, instead suggesting activities like taking short walks or practicing yoga as alternatives.

One crucial strategy for maintaining good health as we age is prioritizing fitness during middle life. By making physical activity a regular part of our routine now, we can significantly improve our chances of staying healthy and vibrant in our later years.

Supporting the latest initiative, Dame Helen, serving as an Age UK representative, expressed: “Regardless of personal opinions on aging, it’s a process we should strive to accept and find comfort in, instead of dreading.
It’s widely recognized that growing older often brings challenges, particularly discomfort such as aches and pains, and it might become more difficult to move around freely and maintain the same level of independence as in our youth.
I back the Age UK’s “Act Now, Age Better” initiative because it encourages individuals in their 50s to implement small adjustments today that can significantly improve their future well-being.
You don’t necessarily need to sign up for a gym membership; instead, you could opt for minor adjustments such as going for a brief walk or practicing yoga, both of which I find enjoyable.
You’re always at an advantage when you begin something early, but it’s also fine to start later. Why not try new things while you’re still young and have more energy?
According to a recent survey conducted by Age UK, approximately half (47%) of individuals aged between 50 and 65 believe they don’t engage in sufficient physical activity.
Approximately one fifth (22%) of participants in a Kantar study reported health problems as an obstacle to exercise, and about eighteen percent (19%) cited feeling unfit as a hindrance. The survey polled 2,100 UK adults aged between 50 and 65 years old.

Almost one in five (18 per cent) said a lack of time prevented them from regular exercise.
As reported, Paul Farmer, the head of our charitable organization, expressed that Age UK’s inaugural campaign primarily focusing on individuals aged 50 to 65 years old, stems from a significant worry about the nation’s overall health – both physical and mental – as we grow older.

Incorporating consistent physical exercise into our daily lives is an excellent method for maintaining good health, happiness, and self-reliance as we grow older.
In simpler terms, Sir Chris stated that his 2023 report presented proof showing the positive impact of physical activity. He suggested that we should prioritize exercise as a key strategy to promote health in our later years and combat age-related mobility issues.
He expressed his joy by saying, ‘It’s great to hear that Age UK is starting a campaign aimed at those in midlife, promoting physical activity. I hope the charity experiences much success with this crucial endeavor.’
Denise Welch, known for her appearances on Loose Women and serving as an ambassador for Age UK, expressed: “I’ve witnessed the challenges that come with growing older, and while some aspects are beyond our reach, I strongly believe that making small adjustments during midlife can significantly improve the quality of our later years.
Last year, Helen firmly emphasized the necessity for tackling age discrimination, following findings indicating that approximately one-third of individuals aged 65 and above have experienced ageism.

The actress expressed dismay and a sense of injustice upon learning about Age UK’s findings, which revealed that numerous individuals faced unpleasant experiences based on their age, ranging from disrespectful treatment to threats.
Helen Mirren stated: ‘We all experience aging, and as time passes, life may become more challenging. Some may face being treated differently, which isn’t just distressing but also unjust.’
‘It’s important for everyone, no matter their age, to feel included and appreciated. That’s the goal Age UK is working towards.’
She summarized by stating, ‘This task is both far-reaching and critically significant. The status quo must be altered, and it’s crucial for everyone’s benefit that we uphold the dignity and recognize the individuality of our elderly population.’
