Helen Fielding Opens Up About Her Grief Through Dark Humor in New Bridget Jones Film
Helen Fielding, the writer known for Bridget Jones, has shared insights about her deceased spouse, explaining that her family deals with their grief through a form of humor tinged with darkness.
66-year-old writer was romantically involved with Kevin Curran, a writer for The Simpsons, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 59 after battling a prolonged illness.
For nearly a decade, Helen and Kevin resided together in Los Angeles, raising their kids Dashiell, age 20, and Romy, 18. After parting ways in 2009, they continued to be interconnected, with Helen maintaining a substantial influence in Kevin’s life until his passing.
In the recently released film “Mad About The Boy,” Bridget’s story closely resembles Helen’s, as the movie adapts from her 2013 book with the same title.
After the passing of Curran, it was disclosed that a witty, somewhat morbid phrase had become a private joke within their family circle.
She told The Sunday Times: ‘We have a saying in our family: ‘don’t get too #deathy.’

Although I usually prefer to keep things impersonal, it’s important to mention that the children’s father passed away. He was a talented writer who worked on ‘The Simpsons’, which meant that no topic, even the darkest ones, was off-limits for his humor.
It shows that even after a tragedy, one can continue being oneself. It doesn’t mean you need to wallow in sadness.
She mentioned about her two kids, stating that they’ve experienced a great deal, making them particularly emotionally perceptive. She clarified that instances in the movie where Bridget’s children send homemade cards to Darcy on his birthday underscore their continuous processing of what transpired with their father. It’s an open topic, she emphasized.
Afterward, Helen admitted that she perceives grief as a ‘dismal pool,’ a place that plunges her into ‘deep gloom.’ Yet, upon emerging from this state, she emphasizes the importance of savoring and appreciating the experience.
In the fourth movie, when Helen portrayed Bridget weeping over her lost husband, it stirred up tears among fans upon the debut of the first trailer.
2016 saw me, a die-hard fan, cheering as my beloved Bridget Jones, portrayed by Renee Zellweger, exchanged vows with none other than Mark Darcy, the character brilliantly brought to life by Colin Firth, in the captivating film Bridget Jones’ Baby.
Throughout the trilogy, their relationship had periods of ups and downs, yet in the end, they found their bliss once it was disclosed that the successful attorney was actually the child’s father.
In the fourth volume, unfortunately, Mark meets his untimely end while working overseas as a human rights attorney. This leaves Bridget both a widow and facing the challenges of single parenthood.
In the preview for the fourth movie, they made it clear that the plot would follow a similar pattern, with Mark’s death happening prior to the events depicted in the film.

Fans who hadn’t read the book before felt heartbroken when they realized the beloved characters didn’t have a happy ending, with many expressing that their hearts dropped at the sight of it.
In a different wording, they posted on social media: ‘I didn’t expect to shed tears for Mr. Darcy’s demise in the latest Bridget Jones film; any chance Mark Darcy is deceased?’
Wait a minute! You’re telling me that a new Bridget Jones film is coming out, and they’ve actually ended up killing off Mr. Darcy?
If Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy split up again, I might feel really upset.)
It’s painful for me to imagine a world without Mark Darcy, especially after they provided her with a joyful conclusion only to take away his character.”
The revised sentence aims to convey the same idea as the original while using more natural and easy-to-read language. The word “universe” has been replaced with “world,” and the question form has been changed to a statement, making it easier for the reader to understand the sentiment being expressed. Additionally, the phrase “kids just to kill Mr. Darcy?” has been rephrased as “provided her with a joyful conclusion only to take away his character” to convey that the story ended happily but unfortunately resulted in the death of Mark Darcy.
It was truly heartbreaking when Colin passed away, and the events that followed only made it worse. Yet, if given a chance, would I want to watch this? Absolutely. Will I enjoy it? Definitely; They wouldn’t dare kill off Colin Firth! (informal)
Oh my goodness, when I caught a glimpse of the latest Bridget Jones trailer and saw Mr. Darcy meet his end, my heart plummeted! Why oh why didn’t they grant them the fairy-tale ending they so richly deserved?
People dislike that Mark Darcy, my man, is still alive in the Bridget Jones movie, as it’s evident that he would surpass, or even outshine, those individuals attempting to win his heart – his soulmate.

1. ‘It took three movies for Bridget and Mr. Darcy to finally be together, only for him to meet an untimely end. Really, you should consider resurrecting Mr. Darcy; it’s quite important.’
or
2. ‘Bridget and Mr. Darcy had to wait through three films before they could be together, just for him to die in the end – it’s ridiculous! Please bring back Mr. Darcy!’
What makes it so unfair that Mark Darcy, one of the most beloved romantic comedy male characters, has passed away without any apparent justification? I’m not the only one feeling this way, right?
In the preview for their forthcoming movie, Bridget is motivated by her friends to resume dating again, having abstained from sexual relationships for four years since Mark passed away and decided on this self-imposed abstinence herself.
Apart from that, she gives up her TV job to manage school drop-offs, humorously depicted as her having a hard time matching pace with the fashionable moms.
While visiting the local park, Bridget encounters an unexpected situation as her children climb and become trapped in a tree. Fortunately, two distinguished gentlemen, Leo Woodall from The White Lotus and Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, arrive to lend a helping hand and rescue them.
Quickly, she discovers herself caught up in a triangular conflict for her affection, involving Roxster, portrayed by Leo, the PE instructor Mr. Wallaker, played by Chiwetel, and the recurring character Daniel Cleaver, once again played by Hugh Grant.

Enthusiasts will likewise find delight, for a captivating sequence unfolds where Roxster leaps into a pool to save a small puppy – an incident reminiscent of the memorable Mr. Darcy’s moment in Pride and Prejudice.
As the story unfolds, Bridget’s relationship with Roxster intensifies, culminating in an extraordinary lovemaking experience following their dinner together.
Nonetheless, as more flirtatious encounters with Mr. Wallaker occur, Bridget becomes increasingly puzzled. Eventually, she inadvertently enters a barn only to discover him partially undressed.
Mad About The Boy will be released in UK cinemas on February 13.
