Heathers: The Musical star rages at drunken audience for ‘screaming’ at cast and begs ‘devoted’ fans not to sing – as she demands ‘stay home and watch Netflix if you want to talk’

Kate Rockwell, known for her role in Heathers: The Musical, publicly expressed her annoyance with disruptive audience members who were either intoxicated or overly enthusiastic fans.

The 41-year-old American actress, dancer, and singer used Instagram to express her frustration with audience behavior and explain proper etiquette for attending the theater.

The popular musical, which is based on the 1988 movie with the same title, has been playing off-Broadway since 2014. Kate joined the cast last year to temporarily fill in as Ms. Fleming, a teacher, when Kerry Butler was unavailable.

On Wednesday, she asked fans not to sing along during her performances, even though she knows they love the show. She explained that they should let the performers do the singing, since that’s what they paid for.

In addition to addressing her young fans, she criticized disruptive and intoxicated hecklers, saying they seemed to lose their basic decency and suggesting they should ‘stay home and watch Netflix‘ if they wanted to keep talking during her performance.

Kate has previously been praised for her roles in several popular musicals, including Bring It On, Rock Of Ages, Mean Girls, and The Sound of Music.

She channeled her love of performing arts into addressing a recent issue, starting by writing a polite message to fans reminding them of proper theatre behavior.

Okay, so she finally messaged us, and it was amazing! It started with, ‘Hey everyone, especially those of you who, like me, are totally obsessed with theater!’ She totally gets it, you know? She said she knows how incredible it is to see a show you adore – especially one you’ve been a fan of forever and can practically recite from memory… It felt like she was talking directly to me, honestly! Like, she understands the feeling of knowing every single line! It was just… perfect.

As a huge Heathers fan myself, it’s amazing to see so many other people who love it just as much! But, and I’m about to sound like a mom here…

Let me tell you, as someone who’s spent a lot of time on stage, there’s a big difference between enjoying a show and disrupting it. It might seem fun to belt out the songs, try the dances in your seat, or shout along with the actors, but honestly? It’s really distracting for those of us up there trying to create a performance. We want you to have a great time, but please, let us do our job and you enjoy it in a way that doesn’t pull focus!

Using your phone during a performance takes you out of the experience and is a major disruption. It distracts the performers and other audience members who are trying to enjoy the show – and who, like you, paid to be there.

You might notice other audience members doing similar things, like those who’ve had a bit too much to drink at the bar, or even shouting out at odd moments, possibly thinking they’re being helpful.

‘Don’t let those people fool you — that’s not ok. And we do not like it.

I understand you didn’t mean any disrespect, and it’s wonderful you’re enjoying yourself. We want everyone – both those performing and the audience – to have a similarly positive experience.

Feel free to enjoy the music at home – sing along with the soundtrack or even watch a slime-making video, we don’t mind! Practice the dance moves wherever you are. But when you come to the show, please let us perform. That’s what you bought tickets for! Consider that ‘mom speech’ finished.

She continued by addressing people who were intoxicated, explaining that if you’re an adult, it’s not okay to yell inappropriate things at performers or make disruptive comments during a show. She specifically called out those who’ve had too much to drink and lose their manners, reminding them that a theater is a workplace for many people, and they should behave respectfully.

Please leave. Live performances require focus and deserve respect, but it’s incredibly rude to disrupt the experience for everyone else. It’s time to act more maturely.

‘If you want to talk through something, stay home and watch netflix.’
