Heartbreaking Update: Esther Rantzen’s Daughter Reveals Mother’s Cancer Treatment is Failing
Esther Rantzen’s daughter stated that the cancer medication her mother received last year is now ineffective.
In 2023, the founder of Childline and a well-known broadcaster was diagnosed with advanced-stage (four) lung cancer. At one point, she was informed that her life expectancy was only a few weeks.
Previously, the celebrity expressed great enthusiasm for a remarkable new medication that apparently slowed down the progression of her cancer. She shared with The Sunday Times that this treatment enabled her to make future plans confidently.
On Thursday, Rebecca Wilcox shared some news about her mom during a 5 News interview, stating that the medication she had been taking was no longer effective.
As a devoted admirer, I found myself moved when Julian inquired about my progress with the meds, asking if it had shown any improvement. However, with a heavy heart, I confessed, “Oh, how I long for it to be so, but I fear that ship has sailed.
Both Dame Esther and her daughter are advocates for making assisted dying legal in the UK.
In reaction to this week’s announcement about the delay in passing an assisted dying law, Rebecca made it clear: “All I can say is, I wish everyone could grasp that the assisted dying bill simply offers a choice for those who desire it.
‘Simply put, it’s about providing her reassurance, and the strength that reassurance would bring her at this moment is something I can’t fully express.’
I’ve been observing the anguish caused by unpredictability, as well as the distress related to the unknown future events.
‘She is unaware of the specific details concerning her impending death, such as the progression of the pain, the tiredness and weariness, or which symptoms may arise.’
‘She is a person who has fought her whole life for other people, and she has no control now.’
Couldn’t we provide individuals such as your mother, who are terminally ill and have limited options, the option to choose when, where, and how their end-of-life journey takes place?
Esther formerly pondered the idea of journeying to Dignitas, a location in Switzerland that offers assisted dying, yet Rebecca recently disclosed that Esther’s deteriorating health now precludes such travel.
She informed 5 News that it’s no longer an option for us, referring to Dignitas. She explained that one needs to be fairly healthy to undergo such a procedure, and if she had chosen to go, she would have passed away several months earlier than she will in the current situation.

In an interview with BBC Today’s program last year, Dame Esther expressed that a shift in the law concerning assisted dying would allow her to anticipate with assurance a peaceful, pain-free demise in the company of beloved individuals.
‘The sole other option that guarantees a painless passing without worry is seeking assistance at Dignitas in Switzerland, as my family could potentially face investigation from authorities for homicide, or accusations of coercion regarding my decision to end my life if they accompany me.’
In various U.S. states, parts of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Austria, Spain, and Ecuador, it is legal to aid terminally ill individuals in ending their lives. Additionally, some other nations have more extensive euthanasia regulations to accommodate the seriously ill.
The Isle of Man’s parliament has approved assisted dying legislation, which is now waiting for the monarch’s approval.
Progress is being made with regards to Jersey, as lawmakers have been advancing the issue. Meanwhile, English and Welsh MPs passed a bill proposed by Kim Leadbeater last November, which aims to make it legal there.
Ms. Leadbetter’s suggestion enables terminally ill adults, who have been given fewer than six months to live, the option to bring their lives to a peaceful end.
The examination of the End of Life for Terminally Ill Adults Bill, conducted by the committee of Members of Parliament, has now concluded. This bill will be discussed again during the report stage in Parliament, which is expected to occur within the upcoming month. After that, there will be a third stage debate.
If implemented, it might require a span of four years to be fully enforced, following a decision to extend the implementation timeline by twice the original length, sparking outrage among supporters of this legislation.
