Nathan Fillion actually explained that animation was a big part of making it work, specifically because the wonderful Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book, is sadly no longer with us. It’s a way to include him and honor his character, which I think is really thoughtful.

This project is set between the original ‘Firefly’ TV series and the movie ‘Serenity.’ Alan Tudyk jokingly referred to this time as the period where fans still believed Wash was alive. Nathan Fillion explained that a true ‘Firefly’ revival means including all of the original characters, staying true to the show’s established timeline.

Because the show uses animation, they can bring characters back even if the original actors aren’t available. Nathan Fillion confirmed they are definitely planning to feature Shepherd Book again. However, he also explained that Ron Glass, the original actor who played Book, is sadly unable to return, so they’re looking for someone who can capture his spirit and essence.
