As a fervent admirer of resilience and bravery, I find myself deeply moved by the tale of Jordan North’s life. The man has shown us that courage isn’t just about facing fears in a jungle or dealing with snakes, but also helping a drenched dog to safety on a chilly winter day.
On Monday evening, Capital Radio personality Jordan North needed rescue from the River Thames in London, as he attempted to save a struggling canine from drowning.
On the banks of the Thames, close to his residence in West London, the contestant from I’m A Celebrity, aged 34, found himself running at approximately 4 pm. There, he noticed a Labrador in distress, battling the river currents.
A concerned bystander alerted authorities after noticing a distressed Jordan acting frantically in the vicinity of Hammersmith Bridge.
A lifeboat crew were out on exercise nearby and arrived on the scene three minutes later to find Jordan sitting on a nearby float lift with the dog.
Onlookers aided by using their phone flashlights to guide the lifeboat towards the stranded individual, allowing for swift rescue of both him and his canine companion.
On his Capital Breakfast program on Tuesday, Jordan expressed gratitude and offered a heartfelt acknowledgement to the RNLI Chiswick team for rescuing him during a harrowing experience as he became quite anxious.
I became quite anxious too since I feared I might lose my balance, thinking I wouldn’t be able to hold on for much longer. Luckily, help arrived exactly when it was needed.
In this situation, it’s truly the RNLI who stepped up to save me, wrapping me in a warm blanket afterwards. Without a doubt, they are the true champions here.
As I recounted my story to my esteemed co-hosts, Sian Welby and Chris Stark, on our radio show, I shared an emotional encounter from my recent run – a heartbreaking sight of a woman in distress, as her beloved dog was struggling in the water below.
Jordan navigated towards a jetty, needing to surmount a 6-foot barrier to get there. There, he was alone, attempting to catch his dog while using his phone flashlight to guide him, calling out “Here, boy, here, boy.
Every time I attempt to catch him, the strong current sweeps him away, leaving me hesitant to jump in. Instead, I made my way onto the buoyancy pontoon and miraculously managed to grab hold of the dog. He was panting and whimpering, his limbs weakened from battling the current for ten minutes.
In my current predicament, stuck aboard this vessel drifting along the Thames, I find myself pinned down by an unexpected canine companion, rendering my lower limb numb. With spectators aplenty, I cry out, appealing for help: “Could someone kindly contact the coastguard for me?
‘But they can’t find me so, this was a beautiful sight, everyone put the lights on their phone.’
To be completely honest, the events unfolded so quickly that I can barely recall the details – not even the name of the friendly pup I encountered or its caring owner. As fate would have it, I found myself returning home, my attire damp from the unexpected downpour.
Commanding Officer Gavin Simmons, along with his team members Sid Blake, Tom Coe, and Cameron Crawley, successfully rescued both Jordan and his canine companion.
Gavin stated: “We’re always ready to lend a hand to anyone facing trouble on the water, round-the-clock, every single day of the year, including our cherished pets!
In this situation, it’s best if people dial 999 and request the Coastguard rather than attempting a rescue on their own. However, we’re pleased that on this occasion, we managed to bring both Jordan and his dog back to safety on solid ground.
Prior to becoming well-known, Jordan spent his professional years at Radio 1. However, his stardom surged unexpectedly when he received an emergency call to join the cast of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here in its 2020 season.
The DJ ended up in second position when he joined the Wales-based competition at the last minute, leaving only two days before the start. He quickly gained a large number of supporters due to his fearful response to the series’ challenging tasks that are well-known for being intense.
After his successful stint on the ITV reality show, Jordan said on Radio 1: “I was initially told ‘not this year’, but then I received a call two weeks later, with someone having dropped out, asking if I wanted to take part instead.
For the next two days, I had to take care of everything – medical appointments, photo shoots, psychiatrist visits, and so on. It was a tight 48-hour schedule. Remarkably, it almost didn’t occur,” shared the radio host.
Besides admitting his constant concern, Jordan also expressed doubts about his future career during his stay at the castle: “Will there even be a career for me after all this? Those were the hardest yet most rewarding three weeks I’ve ever lived.
“It was cold and hungry, we were. I assumed our hunger would improve, but instead, it worsened. All one does is wait. Sunbathing was possible in the jungle, yet not here in Wales. Boredom consumed us.
Talking about the three-week rollercoaster ride in Wales, Jordan shared that it was his brother and I’m A Celebrity host Declan Donnelly who offered him the guidance he needed to overcome all the hurdles and hardships.
He shared about his initial challenge, the Viper Vault where he was confined in a coffin with snakes, by saying: “My sibling is a paratrooper. He can sense when I’m uncomfortable, and he advised me: ‘Whenever you’re cold, wet, or frightened, retreat to your peaceful sanctuary.’
‘So I’m in this coffin full of snakes and I’m screaming: “Happy place Turf More.” I don’t know if you know but it took me an HOUR to get in. I wouldn’t have done it if it weren’t for Dec. I went off set.’
This Christmas, there are numerous methods to aid the RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat teams. For further details, kindly explore RNLI.org/WinterAppeal.
