HBO’s Underrated 10-Part Crime Series Made Detective Shows Look Easy

With so many crime thrillers already available, particularly on TV, it’s tough to create a truly great detective show. But a lesser-known HBO series manages to do just that, offering a captivating 10-episode story that almost makes it seem effortless.

The show is especially interesting because it’s adapted from a popular novel by Stephen King. While HBO is currently famous for its huge fantasy series, they’ve also consistently delivered outstanding crime thrillers, including classics like True Detective and The Sopranos.

Despite the success of many crime thrillers on HBO, one show doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Though it only ran for a single season, it was a fantastic example of how a detective series should be made.

The Outsider Was So Good, It Made Detective Shows Look Easy

Most detective shows follow a familiar pattern: investigators try to figure out who committed a crime. “The Outsider” starts out like these shows, but it quickly becomes something different by mixing realistic police work with unsettling, supernatural elements, creating a truly original experience.

From the very beginning, HBO’s The Outsider is a gripping watch, even when it feels like a typical detective story. Ralph Anderson and Cynthia Erivo are particularly strong in their roles, giving viewers a good reason to keep watching from the start.

Honestly, The Outsider really hits its stride when things start getting…weird. By the time the show dives into the El Cuco myth, you’re so invested in the realistic police investigation that the supernatural stuff feels genuinely creepy because it’s presented so matter-of-factly. It’s a fantastic blend of grounded drama and unsettling fantasy.

I was really impressed with how The Outsider drew me in. Instead of immediately hitting you with all the supernatural stuff, it used Ralph Anderson as a way to mirror my own doubts. I found myself, just like him, questioning whether everything was really supernatural, or if there was a logical explanation hiding somewhere. It was brilliant how they let my skepticism unfold alongside his investigation.

Like many stories adapted from books, the TV series The Outsider made some changes to the original plot. However, Stephen King himself was very pleased with it, even calling it one of the best adaptations of his work, according to a post on Twitter.

The Outsider Doesn’t Get Enough Credit Compared To Other 2010s Shows

Despite earning critical acclaim – with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and being considered a faithful adaptation of Stephen King’s work – The Outsider didn’t achieve broad popularity. Compared to many other shows in its genre, and series released in recent years, it remains somewhat unknown.

When the show initially aired on HBO, the production company, MRC, was already making plans for a second season. There were reports that scripts for the next installment were written, and the cast had expressed interest in coming back if it was made.

Sadly, HBO decided to keep the show as a limited series rather than continuing it for multiple seasons. Looking back, it’s hard not to think HBO might have renewed it for a second season if it had been more popular and reached a wider audience.

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that a second season of The Outsider will ever happen. Still, the first season remains a compelling and complete story, skillfully blending the conventions of detective thrillers with the unsettling atmosphere characteristic of Stephen King’s work.
