HBO’s New High Fantasy Show Is So Good, It’s Already Renewed For Season 2

With so many fantasy shows competing for viewers these days, one HBO series connected to Game of Thrones has already been renewed for two more seasons, proving its popularity. It’s a fantastic time to be a fan of fantasy television! The success of Game of Thrones continues to inspire networks and streaming services to create their own fantasy worlds, leading to numerous spin-offs, prequels, and sequels.

Viewers have plenty of options when it comes to fantasy shows, with popular series like Prime Video’s Critical Role shows (The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein), The Rings of Power, Netflix’s The Witcher and Castlevania, and Starz’s long-running Outlander. Because there’s so much competition, a show really needs to be a hit to get renewed for multiple seasons.

This is especially true when it comes to fantasy shows on HBO. Their new Harry Potter series is predicted to be the most costly TV show ever made, so it makes sense that the network would focus on that. However, despite this, HBO has renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the second Game of Thrones spin-off, for two more seasons after its successful first season concluded in early 2026.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Could Run For Many More Seasons

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories from the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms centers around Ser Duncan the Tall, a large and imposing knight, and his smaller companion, Prince Aegon Targaryen, who serves as his squire. The series reveals that Ser Duncan has a complicated past, but this doesn’t detract from the pair’s entertaining adventures.

Unlike both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms offers a lighter, more character-focused story. It focuses on the everyday experiences of its flawed heroes rather than the complex political games happening around them. Because the show is based on stories that unfold over time, rather than a tightly woven plot like Game of Thrones, it’s likely to have a long run on HBO.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Has An Advantage Over HBO’s Game of Thrones

Based on the three novellas, the show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could have three seasons, adapting The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. However, unlike Game of Thrones and similar shows, this series isn’t a direct, continuous adaptation of the books. The stories are more self-contained, giving the show creators freedom to add new storylines, characters, and surprises without disrupting the main plot.

One of the biggest criticisms of Game of Thrones was that its complex story spread too thin, leaving the finale feeling rushed and unsatisfying. Fortunately, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms avoids this problem. The new series focuses on a smaller cast of characters, making it easier to follow their storylines. Plus, unlike Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms doesn’t have a fixed ending already planned, allowing the story to unfold more naturally.
