Now that HBO is moving beyond its long run of shows centered around Game of Thrones, the network is revisiting another popular fantasy series.
HBO is bringing back Harry Potter as a TV series, offering a fresh take on the story. Unlike the films, a series format will allow them to explore the books’ content more fully. With Game of Thrones concluding, this show demonstrates HBO’s ability to succeed beyond the high fantasy genre.
Harry Potter Offers New Levels of Immersion That House of the Dragon Can’t
This fantasy series starts strong, but struggles to build momentum later on. Being set in a world already established by Game of Thrones presents a challenge, as fans are already aware of many future events, which can diminish the sense of discovery typically enjoyed in fantasy stories.
Adapting Harry Potter as a TV series, instead of more movies, offers an advantage House of the Dragon doesn’t have: more time to tell the story. This allows the creators to explore extra storylines and character development not possible in a film format.
Because House of the Dragon takes place in a world we already know from Game of Thrones, it doesn’t need to spend much time on broad world-building. Instead, it can focus on adding fresh details from the original books that weren’t included in the previous series. Plus, the new actors and their interpretations will bring unique life to the characters and the world itself.
Harry Potter Is What HBO Needs Right Now
Look, everyone still thinks of HBO and immediately jumps to Game of Thrones, but let’s be real – you can’t keep milking one franchise forever. Eventually, the stories get tapped out and people just move on. It felt inevitable that HBO would need a new big hit to carry them through the next ten years, and honestly, Harry Potter feels like the perfect choice. It’s a massive, beloved world with tons of potential, and it’s exactly what they need.
The series is easy to enjoy for viewers who like lighthearted fantasy. It already has a built-in fanbase from the books, films, and other related media. Plus, it has the potential to run for many seasons, drawing from seven books’ worth of material – giving it an advantage over House of the Dragon, which has a more limited story to tell.
HBO’s decision to create a new Harry Potter series seems like a smart move. While some changes from the films might not appeal to everyone, it offers a fresh opportunity for a new generation to enjoy the wonder of Hogwarts, similar to how longtime fans experienced it when the books and movies first came out. Despite any criticism, audiences are clearly more enthusiastic about this extended fantasy series than they were about House of the Dragon.
