HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry Creators Share Season 2 Update

It’s been three months since the first season of the Stephen King series finished airing on HBO Max, and we still don’t know if it will be back for a second season. However, the show’s creators, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, have said they’re currently developing it and expect to have an official announcement very soon.

In a recent interview, Andy and Barbara Muschiettis discussed the possibility of a second season of It: Welcome to Derry. Barbara confirmed they are actively developing it, stating, “It’s going to happen. Everyone is working on it, including the studio. We just want to ensure we have the right story to tell.”

What’s With the Delay for It: Welcome to Derry Season 2?

Andy explained the delay in announcements, saying it’s often due to finalizing agreements. He didn’t want to go into specific details, but confirmed they are generally working towards making these things happen.

Barbara explained that studio announcements often seem like them trying to publicly reassure everyone the show is worthwhile. She believes their show doesn’t need that kind of validation, as its success is already clear. When they officially move forward with a season, it’s a genuine decision based on merit, not just a hopeful attempt to get viewers. The audience has already proven the show is good and people are watching.

The show’s second season will jump back in time another 27 years. Since Season 1 was set in 1962, Season 2 will take place in 1935, exploring the events surrounding the Bradley Gang massacre in more detail. The new season will also feature the hardships of the Great Depression and introduce both new characters and younger versions of those we met in Season 1.

Expect the Bradley Gang in Season 2

Andy Muschietti announced that ‘The Bradley Gang is coming in hot,’ hinting at exciting new developments. Barbara added that the project will feature ‘a lot more fantastic characters’ and promised ‘a lot of fun,’ even mentioning ‘There are hats!’ Andy also described a strong sense of the Depression era, with details like ‘kids smoking’ and ‘kids with no teeth’ contributing to the atmosphere.

Andy mentioned he’s hoping to create a black-and-white version of the show, and Barbara hinted they might even do a musical episode – a trend that’s popular with many shows these days.

She told us that “Annie” is one of their favorite movies, and they’re hoping to create an episode of their show based on it as a musical. However, she also said HBO is likely to be very critical of it.

Welcome to Derry is a prequel series to the two ‘It’ movies, which were based on Stephen King’s novel. Bill Skarsgård returned to play Pennywise and also worked as an executive producer on the HBO Max show. Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane are the showrunners, and the first season had eight episodes.

Season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry is streaming on HBO Max.
