HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series will explore the details and complexities of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world in a way the movies couldn’t. Actor Lox Pratt, who plays Draco Malfoy, recently told 1883 Magazine about the reboot, which is expected to launch in about a year. The first season, consisting of eight episodes, will cover the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. If successful, the show plans to adapt each of the seven books—The Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Azkaban, The Goblet of Fire, The Order of the Phoenix, The Half-Blood Prince, and The Deathly Hallows—over seven seasons.
Following his role as Jack in the recent Lord of the Flies series, actor Pratt revealed that the Harry Potter series will offer fans much more content than the original books, and will explore characters’ backstories starting six years before the books begin.
The series really delves into the world beyond Harry, which is fantastic, and that approach was also used in the films. The showrunners, Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, have mentioned in interviews that we see a lot more detail – things like the teachers in their offices and glimpses of Draco’s home life.
While a show focusing on the Malfoy family’s private life might not sound hilarious, the creator promises a compelling look into their dynamics, especially the relationship between Draco and his father, Lucius, who will be portrayed by Johnny Flynn, known for his role in Ripley. These scenes are typically reserved for the final book, The Deathly Hallows, so HBO is deliberately choosing to explore them earlier in the series.
I don’t want to give away too much, but there are some really powerful scenes set at home that reveal a lot about his character. I appreciated having the space to really develop these characters, because in the movies, Draco often feels one-dimensional – just a mean villain. I think it’s important to understand why he acts the way he does, and you get hints of that in the film, especially in his scenes with Lucius.

Before we get a first look at what the Hogwarts teachers are like when they’re not teaching, let’s remember who’s playing them in this new series. Most notably, John Lithgow, known for his role in Dexter, will be playing Professor Albus Dumbledore, and he looks fantastic in costume!
