HBO has finally revealed a first glimpse of its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, and fans are already buzzing with anticipation. We’ve seen a few behind-the-scenes photos over the past year, but the image HBO shared on Instagram is the first official look at the show’s unique take on the Wizarding world. Though it’s just one still image, it’s packed with details that have viewers eager for the premiere of season 1.
A new official image from the Harry Potter franchise features Dominic McLaughlin as the young Harry Potter. He’s seen walking towards the Quidditch pitch with his back to the viewer, wearing the gold and scarlet robes of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. The robes are embroidered with his name, “Potter,” and the number seven – traditionally the number for the Seeker position. Harry is carrying a broomstick that looks more traditional than the Nimbus 2000 seen in the Harry Potter films.
Lots of Hogwarts students stand in front of McLaughlin, dressed in a mix of traditional wizarding robes and 90s windbreakers. The Quidditch pitch is decorated with Gryffindor and Hufflepuff banners, a crucial detail that proves this scene isn’t from the first Quidditch match in the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie. Instead, it’s a moment that only appears in the book.
HBO’s New Harry Potter Image Promises More Quidditch Matches Than The Movies
Harry’s first Quidditch game as part of the Gryffindor team was against Slytherin, and it was incredibly dangerous. Professor Quirrell almost killed him, but Hermione helped him regain control of his broom. Harry then made a spectacular dive and caught the Golden Snitch with his mouth! Given how famous this Quidditch match is within the Harry Potter series, many fans expected HBO’s show to feature it. However, that hasn’t happened.
A recent image from HBO hints that the first season of the Harry Potter TV series will include a Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. This appears to be a game taken from the Philosopher’s Stone book that wasn’t shown in the movie. It was Harry’s second Quidditch game as Seeker, and he, Ron, and Hermione were particularly anxious because Severus Snape was the referee instead of the usual Madame Hooch.
Early in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry, Ron, and Hermione thought Professor Snape was trying to harm Harry during the Quidditch match against Slytherin. They believed he’d offered to be the referee so he could try again. Later, they discover Snape was actually trying to protect Harry, even though he still made biased calls against Gryffindor. Eager to end the game quickly, Harry caught the Snitch in a record-breaking five minutes.
HBO’s Quidditch Tease Is A Great Sign For The Overall Harry Potter TV Show
HBO has stated they’re staying true to the books, and sharing a picture of the Gryffindor versus Hufflepuff Quidditch match feels like a smart way to get fans excited. But it’s more than that – Quidditch is a hugely popular part of the Harry Potter universe. Ever since it was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone back in 1997, fans have been clamoring for more matches, both in the books and the films. Basically, Harry Potter fans really want to see more Quidditch!
Bringing Quidditch to the big screen was always a challenge. Even the Quidditch match in the first movie, Sorcerer’s Stone, took months of work, making it impossible to include more games. As filmmaking technology improved, it became a little easier, but Warner Bros. still had to limit Quidditch scenes. The Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was significantly shortened because a full match would have been too time-consuming and expensive to create.
HBO’s recent promotional image signals that the upcoming Harry Potter TV series won’t shy away from showing the magical world in all its detail. Fans can expect to see plenty of Quidditch, including Harry’s first game, and all the moments that were left out of the films. This single image addresses years of requests from Harry Potter fans, promising a more complete and immersive experience.
