The upcoming series, “Lanterns,” will be the first completely new live-action show from the DC Universe, and we’ve just gotten our first look at how superpowers will be shown on screen. Since James Gunn became co-head of DC Studios, it’s been a gradual but promising couple of years, and the projects that were announced earlier are starting to get closer to release.
With Superman now playing in cinemas and Man of Tomorrow already in the works, some of the most promising projects in the DC Universe are actually the ones James Gunn isn’t writing or directing himself. This is definitely true for Lanterns, and it’s a big reason why this series is such an exciting development for the DCU.
The upcoming series, Lanterns, promises a realistic and dark take on the Green Lantern mythos, similar in tone to HBO’s True Detective. Early looks at the show didn’t offer much to establish it as a superhero story, but the newest trailer seems to address that, hinting at the reasons behind the lack of traditional superhero elements.
Lanterns Has Been Elusive About Showcasing The Green Lantern Powers Before Now
Early looks at the upcoming series, Lanterns, haven’t shown much indication that superpowers will be a major element. From the initial photos, featuring actors portraying Hal Jordan and John Stewart on a desert road, to the first teaser trailer, the only hint that this is a story about DC Comics’ Green Lantern Corps was Hal Jordan’s power ring.
Fans wondered how realistic the series would be and if it would actually feature space travel. But the new teaser confirms that space, superpowers, and many other exciting elements will be included, offering a much clearer look at what to expect.
Hal Jordan Has His Own Ideas About How To Use His Powers
The preview confirms Hal will wield a power ring in the show, demonstrating abilities like flight, creating protective shields, and even manifesting objects, like a dollar bill. It also hints at the core beliefs that drive his character.
Right away, Hal recognizes the ring’s immense power and how it could be used offensively. He points out that deciding when and if to use it is key to controlling it. However, his immediate use of the ring to make money for himself seems to contradict this, creating a compelling conflict for the show to explore.
Hal possesses a ring, but John does not, and this difference seems to be a key source of conflict in the story. John will likely try to replace Hal, but without a ring, he’s limited in his abilities. This could explain why magical powers haven’t been a major element in past stories about Lanterns.
Lanterns Will Have Plenty Of Opportunities For Action Scenes
Even though earlier reports didn’t show much happening, this new preview confirms that John and Hal will have disagreements and clashes with other characters. It also confirms Guy Gardener will appear, and based on his past roles, he’ll likely use his powers without restraint.
Plus, we see glimpses of the characters in space, offering more chances to showcase their abilities – how they get there, how they move around, and how they interact with alien life.
Overall, Lanterns appears to be a great choice for highlighting Green Lantern abilities, keeping the story grounded on Earth, and showing how power changes as John Stewart steps up to become the next Green Lantern.
Lanterns will begin streaming August 16 on HBO Max.
