Scavengers Reign is a science fiction animated series for adults that first appeared on HBO Max in 2023. The show centers on the crew of a damaged spaceship left stranded, and it was initially praised by critics. However, despite the positive reviews, it didn’t attract a large audience and was canceled by HBO Max, but later rescued by Netflix.

Netflix Backtracked Its Decision to Save Scavengers Reign

The story begins with a damaged spaceship marooned on the alien world of Vesta. Before something catastrophic happens, the crew escapes in life pods, but very few make it, and they become scattered across the planet. The series jumps between flashbacks and the present, following the survivors as they search for each other and try to salvage what’s left of their ship.

The animated series Scavengers Reign was created by Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner. The main characters are voiced by Sunita Mani as Ursula, Wunmi Mosaku as Azi, Alia Shawkat as both Levi and Fiona, Bob Stephenson as Sam, and Ted Travelstead as Kamen. The story follows two separate groups of survivors: Ursula and Sam are together, Azi and Levi are paired up, and Kamen is stranded by himself.

Despite receiving positive reviews, HBO Max canceled the animated sci-fi series Scanvengers Reign after just one season. Fans had hoped for a second season, but it never materialized. Now, three years after it first appeared, Scanvengers Reign will no longer be available on Netflix after May 31st.

Scavengers Reign Has a Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Critics and audiences alike are loving Scavengers Reign. It has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a near-perfect 96% audience score. James Poniewozik of the New York Times called it “a lush, magnificent, hypnotic story of human survival in a truly otherworldly setting—something rarely achieved in science fiction.”

In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, Angie Han named Scavengers Reign one of the best shows of 2023, praising its originality and describing it as a survival story that focuses more on humanity’s relationship with its environment than traditional action. The show has also received high praise from viewers, earning an 8.6 rating on IMDb from nearly 40,000 reviews.

IMDb user codyleedeboer praised the show’s incredible creativity, noting that it was perfectly paced and edited. They also highlighted the excellent soundtrack, voice acting, and writing, saying everything felt carefully crafted and completely immersed you in the story. Despite all this praise and its well-deserved success, it remains a standout work.
