As the third season of HBO’s show approaches, it seems like the story is wrapping up. Season 3 is anticipated to be the final season, but another video game adaptation is already being considered as a potential replacement.
In a recent interview, Casey Bloys, head of HBO and Max content, discussed the future of The Last of Us. He confirmed that Craig Mazin, who is leading the show as showrunner for Season 3 after Neil Druckmann steps down, is currently planning for Season 3 to be the show’s finale. Bloys also mentioned that HBO is eager to begin working with Mazin on a TV adaptation of Baldur’s Gate immediately after The Last of Us concludes.
Season 3 Will Likely Conclude The Last of Us
According to Bloys, the showrunner Craig is currently planning for The Last of Us to end after three seasons. While they’re keeping future options open, that seems to be his current vision.
Regarding Baldur’s Gate, Bloys stated that he’s eager to explore any projects Craig is interested in, and Craig initially pitched Baldur’s Gate to them. While Craig is enthusiastic about it and they’ve discussed it, his current priority is The Last of Us. He plans to revisit Baldur’s Gate when he has more availability.
Back in February, reports surfaced that HBO was developing a TV series based on a highly popular video game. A key detail was that the show would continue the story from the original game, rather than retell it. Craig Mazin, one of the creators, also hinted at his creative vision for the series.
The Baldur’s Gate Series Will Come After The Last of Us
Neil Mazin, after spending almost 1000 hours playing Baldur’s Gate 3, expressed his excitement about continuing the story developed by Larian and Wizards of the Coast. As a longtime Dungeons & Dragons fan, he praised Swen Vincke and the Larian team for their excellent adaptation of the game. Mazin is eager to bring the world of Baldur’s Gate and its characters to life with care and respect, and he’s thankful to Gabe Marano and the Hasbro team for giving him this opportunity.
Filming for the third season of The Last of Us began earlier this month, but fans won’t likely see it on HBO until 2027. This season will heavily feature Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, taking story elements from The Last of Us Part II. Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced will return, and the cast is expanding with new members Jason Ritter, Michaelle Mao, and Kyriana Kratter.
The Last of Us is currently streaming its first two seasons on HBO Max.
