HBO Reveals Curb Your Enthusiasm Replacement Series Featuring Larry David, Barack Obama, & More

Larry David is preparing a new sketch comedy series that’s coming this summer. He revealed some details about the show, like when it will air and who’s in it, at the SXSW festival this year.

David’s new show, titled Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, is a satire of the United States, created to mark the country’s 250th anniversary. Jeff Schaffer is directing the seven-episode series, which will feature approximately four sketches per episode. The show will also include familiar faces from Curb Your Enthusiasm, such as Jeff Garlin, J.B. Smoove, and Susie Essman, who will be playing Susan B. Anthony.

Larry David’s New Sketch Show Announces Star-Studded Guest Lineup

Attendees at SXSW got an early look at the new series, which includes a recreation of the famous V-J Day kiss in Times Square. The original photo shows a sailor kissing a woman to celebrate the end of World War II. However, the show’s version updates the scene: David unexpectedly kisses a stranger, who is understandably upset. This quickly leads to a chaotic scene as a crowd gathers around him in Times Square.

I’m so excited for Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness! The creators, David and Schaffer, just announced some amazing guest stars. Bill Hader is going to play Abraham Lincoln, and there’s someone equally fantastic playing Mary Todd Lincoln. Plus, Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes will be the Wright brothers, and get this – David and Jerry Seinfeld are taking on the roles of Lewis and Clark! It’s going to be hilarious.

I’m excited to report two more big names are joining the cast, though we don’t yet know what roles they’ll be playing. The biggest surprise? Barack Obama himself will be appearing alongside David in one of the sketches! It’s not just a cameo either – Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is actually helping to produce the show, which is pretty cool.

Larry David Shares Working Experience with Barack Obama

As he reflected on his experiences with Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld, David explained, ‘I’m accustomed to being in charge, and President Obama is too.’

Those collaborating on the project noticed Barack Obama giving David a lot of input. David remembered Obama saying, “I don’t think this is the right approach.” Obama also pointed out that even as President, he listened to his advisors, saying, “When I was in the White House, I used to take notes from my advisers, and I was the President of the United States!”

Staying true to his comedic style, Larry David – known for Curb Your Enthusiasm – quipped back with a simple, funny line: “I’m President here.”

David and Schaffer discussed creating a show that celebrated America, though David mentioned it would be a sensitive topic. Schaffer compared it to “having a birthday party for your friend in rehab,” suggesting it felt inappropriate given the current national climate.

As long as people continue to bother each other, there will always be work for us, Schaffer explained. David concurred, saying he only left home to interact with others and gain inspiration, implying there’s little reason to go out otherwise.

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America will premiere on June 26.
