Seven years after the divisive finale of Game of Thrones, HBO is introducing a new character to take Jon Snow’s place and connect with fans. Jon Snow was a hugely popular character from the very beginning, captivating audiences in Season 1 and keeping them invested throughout the entire series.
HBO is launching a new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, on January 18th, which will feature Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, taking center stage. This effectively introduces a new lead character, as Kit Harington’s Jon Snow hasn’t been seen in the Game of Thrones universe since the original show ended in 2019. Despite his absence, Jon Snow remains a beloved character for fans of A Song of Ice and Fire.
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be based on George R.R. Martin’s story, “The Hedge Knight.” Viewers will likely notice strong parallels between the story’s main character, Duncan the Tall, and Jon Snow. The show appears to be very faithful to the original novella, with much of the trailer’s dialogue taken directly from the text.
Fans can probably expect to see Duncan the Tall portrayed very closely to how he’s described in the books. If so, many viewers will likely draw comparisons between him and Jon Snow from Game of Thrones.
Although they appear quite different, the main characters in the new show, based on the trailer and the original story, share many personality traits and a similar attitude. Jon Snow won’t be in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but the character Duncan the Tall is so much like him that many viewers will likely connect with Duncan just as they did with Jon.
Duncan the Tall is the Perfect Replacement For Jon Snow

Duncan the Tall and Jon Snow don’t look much alike. Duncan is very tall and strong, while Jon is of average height and build. They also differ in appearance: Duncan has blonde hair and no beard, and Jon has dark hair and a full beard.
If you asked a fan of Game of Thrones to describe Jon Snow, they’d probably say he’s honorable, modest, and deeply loyal. In fact, many people believed he should have been king of Westeros – and he would have been a strong leader.
Jon was a very honorable man who didn’t believe he deserved to be king. Duncan, based on what we know about him, would probably feel the same way if asked to rule. However, because of his family history and where he comes from, it’s unlikely anyone would ever consider him for the throne anyway.
Both Duncan and Jon prioritized the safety of the realm above their own desires. Jon, in particular, sincerely wanted to join the Night’s Watch in Game of Thrones because he believed it was the best way to protect the people and serve the realm.

Right from the start of the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms trailer, Dunk the knight explains what it means to be a true knight, hinting that he’ll either live up to his promises or die trying. He declares he will “defend the weak and the innocent” and that he made a solemn oath to do so.
I’ve served Ser Arlan of Pennytree since childhood. He tasked me with becoming a worthy knight – to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves. I made a solemn promise to do just that.
The trailer immediately shows Duncan attending the funeral of his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree. As a ‘hedge knight,’ Duncan isn’t a knight by birth or status; Arlan knighted him himself. Despite this, Duncan remains committed to upholding his knightly vows and fulfilling his duties – a path that closely mirrors what Jon would do in a similar situation.
Ser Duncan the Tall is a remarkably skilled fighter. Interestingly, even though the new series hasn’t come out yet, Duncan was actually mentioned in Season 4 of Game of Thrones. This conversation hinted at future events in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and established that Duncan is a master swordsman.
Most fans of Game of Thrones already know Jon Snow is a skilled fighter. He began sword training in the very first episode and won numerous battles throughout the series. It remains to be seen how his abilities compare to Duncan’s, but both characters are equally impressive with a sword.
Both characters share a similar beginning as outsiders. Duncan, known as a Hedge Knight, wasn’t tied to any lord or kingdom. He traveled around, taking on temporary work and essentially living a life on the road with no permanent home.
Before Jon discovered he was a Targaryen – and the true heir to the Iron Throne – he wasn’t treated with the same respect as the Stark children. Being known as Ned Stark’s bastard meant he didn’t share their family name or status, and Ned’s wife, Catelyn, consistently treated him differently than she did her biological children.
Jon decided to join the Night’s Watch partly because he felt like an outsider. While he genuinely wanted to help people, he also understood he didn’t truly belong in Winterfell, as he wasn’t Ned Stark’s legitimate son.
Will Jon Snow Return to the Game of Thrones Universe?

A lot of fans of Game of Thrones want to see Jon Snow return to the show. Many viewers were disappointed with how his story ended in the final season and believe he deserves a more satisfying conclusion.
For a couple of years, there were plans for a Game of Thrones spin-off focusing on Kit Harington’s character, Jon Snow. Unfortunately, the project didn’t progress beyond the initial stages of development and has now been put on hold indefinitely.
While there’s a small chance the project could be revisited someday, it seems highly improbable. Kit Harington recently stated he’s not interested in returning to the series, though Sophie Turner has expressed willingness to reprise her role.
Viewers will need to wait for Duncan the Tall to take the lead in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is coming to HBO and HBO Max on January 18, 2025.
