HBO offers up disappointing update on Big Little Lies season 3 (though it's far from surprising)

As a devoted fan of Big Little Lies, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of this captivating series like a Monterey resident awaits the arrival of summer. With its intricate storytelling, stellar cast, and stunning visuals, it quickly became my go-to escape from reality. The suspense surrounding the identity of the murder victim was as addictive as a Monterey sunset with a glass of chardonnay in hand.

Enthusiasts of the series “Big Little Lies” are yet to receive any updates regarding a third season, however, there’s an understandable cause for the delay!

Back in 2017, I found myself utterly captivated by Big Little Lies on HBO – a series adapted from Liane Moriarty’s novel. The narrative revolves around the tumultuous events unfolding in the picturesque town of Monterey, California, where a shocking murder sets the tone for the storyline. However, it takes time for the audience to learn the identity of the unfortunate victim. This tragic event gradually unveils a plethora of secrets hidden beneath the town’s seemingly idyllic facade, revealing its ominous underbelly.

The show stood out thanks to the stunning cast with Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott and more. It was met with huge critical acclaim, including winning Emmys for Best Limited Series and acting wins for Kidman, Skarsgard and Dern.

Originally planned as a standalone series, the overwhelming success prompted HBO to produce a second season, inspired by a novella penned by Moriarty. This decision boosted the celebrity quotient with Meryl Streep joining the cast. Although not quite achieving the first season’s level of success, it still proved to be popular among viewers.

It appeared that a third season was imminent, but there were several setbacks. Later on, Nicole Kidman took on the lead role in Hulu’s adaptation of Moriarty’s book “Nine Perfect Strangers,” and other cast members have been occupied with different projects. However, it’s now clear that the delay in the show’s next season is due to a compelling reason.

Why Season 3 of Big Little Lies is taking so long.

As a devoted fan, I’d put myself in the shoes of HBO President Casey Bloys, and here’s how I might express it: “On our press tour, I shared with reporters that we’re in a bit of a pickle with Season 3. You see, to wrap up the story, we need Moriarty, but he only appears in the book we’re yet to get our hands on. So, we’re eagerly waiting for it, so we can dive right in and finish the tale.

Anthony Moriarty is currently developing a follow-up to his novel “Lies,” which may feature Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. Over the summer, Moriarty has been discussing potential aspects of this sequel with various locations. However, no further details about the plot have been revealed yet.

The upcoming season of the show may not air before 2026 at the latest, due to unforeseen circumstances including the untimely death of the original executive producer and director, Jean-Marc Vallée, in 2021. Despite David E. Kelly continuing as the main producer and scriptwriter, filling the void left by Vallee will be challenging.

At present, enthusiasts of the series “Big Little Lies” will have to be patient as they await Season 3, but here’s hoping that we’ll soon find ourselves immersed in this captivating storyline once more.

Big Little Lies is streaming on Max.
