HBO Max’s New 6-Part Crime Thriller Series Becomes Global Streaming Hit

HBO Max’s new crime thriller, Privileges, is already a hit with viewers around the world, quickly gaining popularity after its release.

The French series, created by Marie Monge and Vladimir de Fontenay, launched globally on HBO Max on March 27th. New episodes will be released weekly on Fridays throughout April, and each episode is approximately 52 minutes long.

Just after its release, the show Privileges has climbed to the 10th spot on HBO Max’s list of most popular shows worldwide, according to data from FlixPatrol as of March 31st. It currently ranks behind The Pitt, Rooster, DTF St. Louis, Like Water for Chocolate, Memory of a Killer, Yali Çapkini, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and Doc.

The film Privileges is currently a top 10 hit on HBO Max in 32 countries, primarily in Europe, but also including several nations in Asia like Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Taiwan. It’s also popular in Belize and Haiti. While it’s available to stream in the United States, it hasn’t broken into the top 10 here yet.

What Is Privileges About?

The series takes place in a luxurious Paris hotel called The Citadel and centers on Adèle Charki, a young woman recently released from prison on a work-release program. She gets a job as a bellhop, and while working at the hotel, she discovers a secret criminal network operating behind its elegant facade.

I just finished watching Privileges, and wow, it really got under my skin! It’s this super tense movie that mixes classic French crime thrillers with a really unsettling psychological edge. The story follows Adèle as she’s thrown into this world of powerful people and dangerous criminals, and it’s all about who’s really in control. What I loved is that she’s not just a victim – she’s constantly trying to outsmart everyone, and you’re left wondering if she can actually find a way to make things right.

Manon Bresch leads the cast of the show, supported by Melvil Poupaud, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Roxane Mesquida, Nadia Benzakour, Nina Zem, Josepsh Olivennes, Anne Azoulay, Mila Michael, Sandor Funtek, Stephanie Atala, Eva Huault, Nancy Marie-Claire, and Aaron Kahn.

How Is Privileges Being Received?

Currently, only the first episode of HBO Max’s Privileges is available, so it hasn’t been reviewed by critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, one viewer, Tracey S (@RT20851134), gave it a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, saying it was a “Good first episode. Interesting cast with great locations in Paris.”

The series Privileges doesn’t have a critic or audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Joel Keller at Decider recommends watching it in his “Stream It Or Skip It” review, stating:

The first episode of Privileges introduces many storylines and hints at passionate, risky connections, all unfolding within the glamorous backdrop of a Parisian luxury hotel.

In a review for The Review Geek, Christine Kinori says that the series Privileges is starting strong with just five episodes left, thanks to a solid performance from the cast. She believes it has the potential to be a really good series if the writing stays consistent.
