HBO Max’s Dark Comedy Hacks Becomes Streaming Hit with 100% RT Score

HBO is known for its critically acclaimed dramas like The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and Succession. However, the platform also offers fantastic comedies, and Hacks is a standout. The show, a dark comedy, recently returned for its final season and has quickly become very popular with viewers.

According to FlixPatrol, the show is currently the second most popular on HBO Max in the U.S. The final season premiered on April 9th, and within a day, it quickly became a hit, initially ranking at number five before rising to number two, just behind The Pitt.

What Is Hacks About?

The show stars Hannah Einbinder as Ava Daniels and features Deborah Vance, a famous comedian performing in Las Vegas. Deborah needs fresh material to keep her show – and her career at the Palmetto Casino – going strong.

Ava is a TV comedy writer facing career difficulties after a controversial tweet. She’s now forced to work for veteran comedian Deborah Vance, and the two clash because Deborah is used to writing all her own jokes.

Hacks explores the parallel journeys of two women as they manage their professional and personal challenges, and the surprising connection they forge while seeking common ground. The show quickly became popular with both critics and audiences, and continues to draw strong viewership even in its final season.

Hacks Has an Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score

From the beginning, Hacks has been a hit with critics. It boasts a remarkable 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews, and is finishing its highly praised run on a high note, remaining as funny and clever as ever.

In a review for The Travers Take, Peter Travers praised the leads in Hacks, particularly Jean Smart. He noted that Smart powerfully portrays the underlying pain beneath the humor in what might be her most memorable role, and that her chemistry with Hannah Einbinder adds genuine warmth to their witty banter.

In a review for New York Magazine/Vulture, Roxana Hadadi praised Hacks, noting that the show portrays Deborah as a strong and admirable figure who champions free speech, female empowerment, and independence. Verne Gay of Newsday began their review by calling the final season “funny, melancholy, and flawless.”

Though fans are disappointed the show is ending, they’re glad Hacks is finishing strong. New episodes will be released every Thursday, culminating in the series finale on May 28, 2026. Early reviews suggest it’s an episode you won’t want to miss.

Hacks is available to stream on HBO Max.
