HBO Max’s 3-Part Sci-Fi Fantasy Masterpiece, Primal, With 100% RT Is Surging on U.S. Streaming Charts Charts

Genndy Tartakovsky consistently delivers exceptional work. Fans who loved his earlier series like Samurai Jack (both the original and the 2017 reboot) and Dexter’s Laboratory – a long-time favorite on Adult Swim – will recognize his talent is on full display once again with his latest project for HBO Max.

I was so thrilled when Genndy Tartakovsky followed up his brief return to Samurai Jack with Primal in October 2019! They launched it with a really cool five-night premiere, and it immediately grabbed my attention. Now, with three seasons under its belt – the newest one just dropped in January 2026 – it’s absolutely dominating the streaming charts, and I couldn’t be happier for him and the team!

During March, the series Primal ranked among the top 10 most-streamed shows in over 40 countries on HBO Max. It reached the top 5 in 14 countries, including the United States, and was one of the two most-streamed shows in more than five countries.

Is that good? Seems good.

Why Primal Is Conquering Streaming In March

Okay, so Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal is seriously amazing. It feels way more like Samurai Jack than Dexter’s Lab – it’s almost entirely visual storytelling. The show centers around this caveman, Spear, and a T-Rex named Fang, who unexpectedly become friends after a really rough experience. Together, they’re just trying to survive in a super brutal prehistoric world, and believe me, there’s no shortage of dangerous creatures trying to kill them. It’s intense!

Critics and viewers have overwhelmingly praised the series. It boasts a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and an 87% audience score – both incredibly high numbers. This success is thanks to both the stunning visuals and the compelling stories.

Baron described the show’s story as thoroughly enjoyable, classic entertainment. While acknowledging it doesn’t reach the same level of psychological depth as the final season of Samurai Jack, and isn’t quite as funny as some of Tartakovsky’s other work, he noted it successfully evokes emotion and makes viewers connect with the characters.

How Primal Is Exactly That, But Also So Much More

Many people imagine early humans as simple and savage, almost like animals. However, as Baron points out, the movie Primal brilliantly challenges that idea.

What really struck me about the film was how it showed Spear’s pain and his memories of being a father. Seeing him express himself through art – like those cave paintings and shadow puppets – made him feel so much more real and relatable, like he’s still figuring things out. And I loved how Fang, even without acting like a human, still had a very distinct personality. It was a smart choice not to give her human expressions, but she definitely felt like a character with her own way of being.

Calling Primal good doesn’t quite capture how amazing it is, particularly if you were a fan of Samurai Jack. That’s probably why so many people are still discovering and watching it now.
