A popular HBO Max show that was cancelled over a year ago is now heading to Netflix.
According to What’s on Netflix, all three seasons of the series will be available to stream on Netflix U.S. starting August 31st. This move adds the show to a growing list of HBO and HBO Max titles now on Netflix, including shows like Insecure, Ballers, Band of Brothers, and Six Feet Under. Currently, you can still watch all three seasons on HBO Max.
The Sex Lives of College Girls Was an Instant Hit
Premiering in 2021, The Sex Lives of College Girls quickly gained popularity. The show stars Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp, and Alyah Chanelle Scott and centers around four freshman roommates at a Vermont college as they experience their first year—and explore their active social lives.
As a big fan of compelling TV, I was thrilled to see Sex Lives get such a positive reception – it even earned a nomination at the GLAAD Media Awards! And the show clearly resonated with audiences because HBO Max picked it up for a second season just days after the first season wrapped up in December 2021. They clearly saw the potential, because before Season 2 even finished airing, they’d already greenlit a third season! It’s great to see a show like this get the recognition and continuation it deserves.
Both seasons of the show received overwhelmingly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with Season 1 earning a 97% Fresh rating and Season 2 holding strong at 94%. This success made the show’s eventual cancellation all the more disappointing.
One Major Cast Exit May Have Hurt Ratings
Her music career was taking off, which led to her becoming a regular cast member starting with the second season. She made a brief return as Leighton Murray in Season 3, appearing in just the first two episodes. However, her departure impacted the show, as ratings declined in Season 3, and both fans and critics weren’t as impressed with the new season compared to the first two.
The series received mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and was canceled only two months after its final episode aired in early 2025. While there were discussions about finding a new platform for the show – something that’s been done successfully in the past – transferring a series between streaming services is more complicated than moving it from traditional television to streaming, or the other way around.
The show concluded earlier this year, with Channing Dungey, CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, confirming its end in March. Despite arriving on Netflix next month, there are currently no plans for a new season. However, if it performs well on the streaming platform, a revival isn’t out of the question.
