As October ends, many people are enjoying scary movies on streaming services. HBO Max’s most popular titles show that this year’s best horror films, along with other chilling favorites, are getting a lot of attention. Interestingly, one movie in the top ten isn’t horror at all – it’s a drama, and I’m particularly interested in checking it out, especially since it has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

HBO Max’s 9 Perfectly Horrifying Movies In The Top 10
As a big fan of horror movies, I’ve been really enjoying the recent surge of scary and critically acclaimed films. It seems like many HBO Max subscribers feel the same this October, with nine horror titles landing on the platform’s Top Ten list. Here’s a look at what everyone’s been watching:
- Weapons (2025)
- It (2017)
- It: Chapter 2 (2019)
- The Substance (2024)
- Sorry, Baby (2025)
- Bring Her Back (2025)
- Hunted By My Husband (2025)
- The Shining (1980)
- Edward Scissorhands (1990)
- Stephen King’s It (1990)
I’ve been really enjoying the recent horror movies! Weapons was particularly wild, mostly thanks to the unforgettable villain, Aunt Gladys. And both The Substance and Bring Her Back delivered some seriously disturbing body horror – I actually had to look away during a few scenes!
Honestly, I wasn’t surprised to see so many of the It films pop up on the Top Ten charts. After experiencing the absolutely wild creature effects and genuinely shocking deaths in the Welcome to Derry prequel, it makes perfect sense that audiences would want to revisit Pennywise and all his terrifying forms. It really left a mark, and people clearly wanted more of that creepy goodness.

HBO Max offers plans starting at $10.99 per month and features a wide variety of content, including popular movies, critically acclaimed TV shows, classic series, and notable films. Check out their current deals here.
Although Hunted By My Husband isn’t a horror movie, the documentary is unsettling because it’s about the DC sniper who killed 10 people. Given that the killer’s ex-wife survived his attacks, it’s easy to see why people are so interested in this true story.
What’s really standing out to me about HBO Max’s most popular shows isn’t just people watching new horror movies, but also revisiting older favorites. The Shining is a standout Stephen King adaptation, largely thanks to Jack Nicholson’s incredible performance and the movie’s unsettling portrayal of a character losing his mind. Plus, it’s a great movie to get into horror – it’s scary without relying on excessive gore.
I’ve been thinking about Edward Scissorhands, and while it’s not exactly a scary movie in the traditional sense, it really feels like a horror story for Edward himself. He’s trapped by these metal hands, and it makes it so hard for him to connect with people – it’s heartbreaking to watch him struggle with something so basic.
Even though I enjoy all of these movies and their spooky vibes, there’s one in particular that really stands out to me.

It’s An Impressively Terrifying List, But I’m More Interested in the Lone Holdout
All the movies on the Top Ten list are definitely worth watching. But the one I’m most excited about is Sorry, Baby – it’s the only one that isn’t a horror film.
The new A24 film, Sorry, Baby, is receiving high praise, currently boasting a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It tells the story of a woman working to rebuild her life after a difficult experience, a theme that deeply connects with me personally, as I’ve struggled with depression and feeling stuck. What’s particularly inspiring about the film is that it focuses on a woman overcoming depression, rather than simply showing her struggle with it.
I really enjoyed the trailer, especially the witty way it shows how people often say the wrong things when someone is dealing with a difficult time. I also loved seeing the importance of supportive friendships and how they can help someone keep going. Overall, this 2025 movie is definitely a must-see for me and is at the top of my list!
I definitely think the scary movies currently popular on HBO Max are worth checking out, but I’m most excited to watch Sorry, Baby. As a big fan of A24 films and because the movie’s story feels very real, I know I’ll enjoy it.
