Warner Bros.’ streaming service has gone through many changes. It first launched in 2020, offering original content from both Warner Bros. and HBO. Then, in 2022, it was renamed Max, but it recently went back to its original name this summer.
The upcoming changes to HBO Max go beyond just a name change. Reports indicate that CNN Max, the 24/7 live news stream from the cable news network, will be removed. This change is scheduled to happen on Nov. 17.
CNN is shifting its streaming strategy because, while Disney plans to integrate Hulu, CNN will create its own dedicated streaming channel. There’s no confirmed launch date for the app yet. However, HBO Max will still offer CNN’s original series, including Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy and The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.
According to Alex MacCallum, CNN’s executive vice president of digital products and services, CNN has greatly benefited from providing a live, 24/7 news stream to HBO Max subscribers for the past two years. They gained valuable insights from HBO Max’s large audience about what viewers want from CNN, and are excited to use those learnings when they launch their own streaming service later this fall. They anticipate this new service will help them expand their viewership with a distinctive offering.
Following the brief run of its previous streaming service, CNN+, CNN transitioned into a live news streaming center on HBO Max in the autumn of 2023. They revealed plans for another try in May, aiming for a launch this fall. Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t yet announced the service’s name, how much it will cost, or when it will officially become available. CNN’s new streaming service will feature both live channels and a variety of on-demand shows and programs. It’s a second chance for CNN in the streaming world, building on lessons learned from CNN+.
Disney+ Will Soon Incorporate Hulu
HBO Max isn’t alone in undergoing big changes; recently, it was revealed that Disney will be phasing out Hulu as a standalone streaming service and app by 2026. This decision came after Disney’s full acquisition following a deal with Comcast in June, and was confirmed in August. As part of this change, Disney will also be rebranding its existing Star content internationally under the Hulu name.
However, this change will cost more, beginning later this month. Subscribers can still choose between Disney+ and Hulu as individual services, but that will add $2 to their current bill. The ad-free Disney+ Premium will cost an additional $3.
HBO Max hasn’t said if the recent changes will lead to higher prices. But in August, they did confirm they’ll be doing something many subscribers dislike: cracking down on password sharing. The streaming service stated they plan to be more “aggressive” about this issue before the year ends.
