HBO isn’t greenlighting any more Game of Thrones spinoffs…for now
As a seasoned fan of “Game of Thrones,” I find myself both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming projects in the works. On one hand, the prospect of more stories set in Westeros is tantalizing, yet on the other, I’ve learned to be cautious with my expectations.
At present, HBO is airing one prequel series from “Game of Thrones” titled “House of the Dragon,” and another titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is scheduled for release on HBO and Max next year. It appears that there are several more projects related to this franchise in development, including a series about Aegon the Conqueror, a potential “Game of Thrones” movie, and possibly Maisie Williams reprising her role as Arya Stark. Given that Warner Bros. Discovery has expressed an interest in focusing on franchises, it seems that we might be faced with an abundance of “Game of Thrones” content in the future. Is there a chance we could be overwhelmed by too much “Game of Thrones”?
Hold on there. Even though HBO is constantly considering new ideas, it doesn’t automatically mean that every concept they’re developing will become a series or movie. The network has a history of being selective and not moving forward with projects simply because they are high-profile or have well-known individuals associated with them. For instance, they scrapped the proposed Jon Snow sequel before it even took flight and canceled a show called Blood Moon after investing in filming a pilot. In a recent interview, HBO executive Casey Bloys emphasized that as of now, we should only expect the Game of Thrones spinoffs that have been known about for some time: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
According to Bloys, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, he ponders, “How many excellent ‘Game of Thrones’ series are there?” His response is, “These are the only ones we believe can last. No potential contenders have a green light yet.
At this stage, it’s important to clarify that many of the reported projects related to “Game of Thrones” such as the Jon Snow series, the movie, and what Maisie Williams is involved with, are more rumors leaked rather than official announcements. This might lead one to believe that Warner Bros. Discovery is aggressively developing numerous new “Game of Thrones” projects, but in reality, we’re hearing about concepts that were never intended for public consumption at this stage.
Companies such as Disney indeed put in a great deal of effort when creating new Star Wars and Marvel projects, yet I’m open to the idea that Max Broy and his team won’t produce a Game of Thrones spinoff unless they believe they can make it exceptional. According to Entertainment Weekly, Broy was not focusing on the financial aspect but rather whether such a film would be enjoyable and grand in scale. While there is potential for this, it doesn’t guarantee it will happen.
