HBO Finally Resurrects Harry Potter for the 2020s With First Look at Reboot

Fans waited three years, and Warner Bros. has now given a first glimpse of the new reboot. The original seven-book series was made into eight movies between 2001 and 2011, and now it’s being adapted for television.

Warner Bros. gave fans their first glimpse of the new HBO series on March 24th, with plans to release a teaser or trailer on March 25th. The series is currently scheduled to debut in early 2027.

Harry Potter‘s First Look Is Filled With Meaningful Details

The initial image offers a glimpse of Dominic McLaughlin, the new Harry Potter actor, stepping into the world of Quidditch – though we only see him from behind. He’s portraying Harry, number 7, walking towards the Quidditch stadium with his broomstick in the snowy landscape, and other children can be seen further away.

The robes in the game are a bit different from the ones seen in the movies, even though they share the same basic colors. Instead of having the player’s name on the side, the game robes display it vertically, and the player number is more prominently centered. The movie robes were solid scarlet with gold accents around the neck and numbers, but the new robes use a mix of different shades of both scarlet and gold.

The first glimpse of the new series reveals significant changes to the house flags. While not all flags are visible, the designs for Hufflepuff and the Quidditch team appear to be updated. Fans have also spotted a homemade flag honoring Fred and George.

It’s encouraging to see these improvements, especially after the initial negative reaction. While the show hasn’t confirmed many details yet, some early photos from the set worried fans because they looked very similar to the original movies. Given the show is starting about fifteen years after the movies ended, comparisons are inevitable.

Even Chris Columbus, the director of the first two films, was surprised by recent photos from the new movie. After seeing images from August 2025, he wondered what the point of his original costume designs for Hagrid was, as the new film seemed to be using the exact same look.

He explained that he’d expected the costumes and overall presentation to be new and improved, but it felt like nothing had changed. He added that everything would likely remain as it always has.

Though the initial image doesn’t reveal much, it’s obvious that the new series will share some familiar elements with what came before. This is expected, as it’s being filmed at the same Warner Bros. studio and the storyline itself calls for certain continuities.

The series has many strengths, especially its visual effects. Advances in technology are helping to build a truly magical world. With plans to run for ten years and adapt one book per season, the show is focused on establishing its own identity, separate from the popular movies, to ensure its success.

Harry Potter is expected to premiere in early 2027.
