HBO Exec Doubts ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Series Will Release New Seasons Annually

HBO has released a first look at its new Harry Potter TV series, and announced it will premiere on December 25th. The show plans to cover one book per season, mirroring the school year timeline of the original novels. Unlike some other HBO shows that release new seasons every year, it seems the Harry Potter series won’t follow that same schedule, even though each book covers a single school year.

Shows like The Pitt and Hacks are made relatively quickly because they aren’t overly complex. However, HBO programs that require more elaborate production take significantly longer. HBO Max’s Casey Bloys recently told The Hollywood Reporter that, similar to other ambitious series, new seasons of Harry Potter won’t be released every year.

It’s a balancing act. While fans would love big, immersive shows like Harry Potter, House of the Dragon, or The Last of Us to return every year, it’s simply not feasible from a production standpoint. These shows are incredibly complex, and bringing them back annually requires starting fresh with experienced teams – people like John Wells or Greg Berlanti. It also helps when the show doesn’t rely heavily on complex visual effects, like dragons or large numbers of zombies.

Now that the first season of Harry Potter is arriving in December, it’s probably safe to say we won’t see Season 2 until 2028. While long waits have become common for some HBO shows, it’s still disappointing considering that new seasons of Game of Thrones used to come out every year.

The original movies typically came out every year, with a few gaps of two years between releases. As the story went on and the magical world became more detailed, the young actors visibly grew up during filming, sometimes appearing older than their characters.

A key concern for the new TV series is how viewers will react. It’s been a long time – fifteen years – since the last movie, and some might think this reboot is happening too quickly. Plus, dedicating a whole season to each book is a big undertaking, meaning the actors and crew will likely be committed to the project for over ten years. The last time the creators rushed things with the Wizarding World, it didn’t go well, so they’re hoping for a better outcome this time.

The first Fantastic Beasts movie, released in 2016 and set in America, was a box office hit. Those involved initially planned for a five-film series. However, the subsequent movies, The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022), weren’t as successful with either audiences or critics. Currently, there are no indications that the remaining two planned films will ever be made.

Given this, it’s likely that even though the planned Harry Potter show is expected to run for seven seasons, HBO might cancel it if the initial response from viewers isn’t positive.
