HBO Disables Comments to Quell Harry Potter Reboot Backlash
As a devoted movie fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when HBO finally revealed the first castings for their Harry Potter reboot series! The announcement introduced six new members of the Hogwarts staff, a news that’s been long overdue after more than a year of speculation and buzz about who would step into the shoes of the legendary British actors who breathed life into the Wizarding World in the original eight movies.
On Monday, April 14th, the announcement was made, revealing that six members of the Hogwarts staff team would be joining us for numerous future seasons: most of them are here to stay.
- John Lithgow – Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer – Minerva McGonagall
- Paapa Essiedu – Severus Snape
- Nick Frost – Rubius Hagrid
- Luke Thallon – Quirinus Quirrell
- Paul Whitehouse – Argus Filch
Previously, multiple reports suggested several individuals as potential candidates for the Harry Potter roles. However, HBO’s announcement serves as the first authentic confirmation that Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse are indeed part of the project. Prior to this, neither of these names had been linked to it through rumors.
In response to these announcements, some fans expressed a mix of feelings, yet much of the criticism was directed at Paapa Essiedu, who will be playing Snape in this new production. As a Black actor, he is taking over the role previously held by the late Alan Rickman in the original Harry Potter films. This casting change represents a racial shift from the original depiction.
In light of the criticism, HBO has taken steps by turning off commenting options on their Harry Potter cast announcement posts across Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. This move has shielded their official posts from harmful comments, but unfortunately, numerous disrespectful and even racist remarks have still surfaced across various social media platforms.
Why Paapa Essieu’s Snape Casting Isn’t As Inaccurate as Some Think
Similar to many characters in the Harry Potter series, the books did not explicitly state Snape’s ethnicity, but he was often depicted as a man with a thin build, a long, hooked nose, and greasy, shoulder-length black hair, and skin that appeared yellowish or pale and lacked any natural radiance.
It’s possible that those criticizing HBO and Essiedu for the character’s skin tone might not realize that people of color can also have pale or sallow complexions. The term ‘sallow’ doesn’t only apply to a pale, white skin tone. Makeup could still be used to give Essiedu a paler, less vibrant appearance, suggesting illness or weakness in his character.
Some have raised concerns about how the character of Snape might be perceived if he were portrayed as Black in the HBO reboot. For instance, James Potter’s past bullying of Snape could potentially be interpreted as racially-driven, and Harry Potter’s initial mistrust of the professor upon entering Hogwarts may seem questionable.
Without a doubt, Essiedu is destined to play a crucial part in the Harry Potter series for many years ahead, stretching right up until The Deathly Hallows. It is here that viewers will uncover his moving history with Lily Potter and his hidden role as the franchise’s unsung hero.
Or, in a slightly different way:
For a long time to come, Essiedu will undoubtedly assume a significant part in Harry Potter, culminating in The Deathly Hallows where audiences will be introduced to his heartrending past with Lily Potter and learn about his role as the franchise’s unacknowledged hero.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve noticed that some people are labeling Essiedu’s casting as a “woke” decision, but I believe it’s more about recognizing talent. His exceptional performances in projects like “I May Destroy You” have demonstrated his abilities, and if he managed to convince HBO he’s the perfect fit for Snape, then I’m excited to see what he brings to the role.
HBO’s Harry Potter Controversy Is Just Getting Started
Harry Potter still needs to fulfill some key roles in order to adapt J.K. Rowling’s first book, “The Sorcerer’s Stone,” for Season 1. Finding the Golden Trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) is a top priority for HBO, and they have recently provided an update on the progress of their extensive open casting call.
Following the significant criticism over certain recent adult casting choices, such as Professor Snape, HBO will likely be cautious in selecting their approach to reveal the upcoming stars of the franchise, aiming to avoid a wave of internet backlash directed towards them.
A prior statement suggested that Harry Potter is planning to significantly increase the representation of characters of color in lead roles. Since Hermione Granger has been portrayed by Black actresses in the play “The Cursed Child” for some time now, many fans are hoping, or perhaps even anticipating, that at least one member of the Golden Trio will be cast as a person of color.
It appears that due to Harry Potter fans being deeply connected with the initial cast, and many already resistant to the idea of a remake, it’s likely that discussions surrounding the series and casting choices will remain contentious for quite a while.
Despite the ongoing debate sparked by J.K. Rowling’s transphobic remarks, she continues to hold the position of executive producer for the forthcoming reboot, a fact that has remained contentious.
No matter what, enthusiasts looking forward to the reboot can expect updates in the upcoming months, which may include announcements regarding the casting for Hogwarts students, additional professors, and other adult characters like Molly Weasley, Olivander, and the Dursleys – Vernon and Petunia.
Harry Potter is expected to start filming this year in time to premiere on HBO in 2026.
