HBO considering filming seasons of the new Harry Potter show back to back
As a movie buff with over three decades of immersion in the magical world of cinematic storytelling, I must say, the prospect of a new Harry Potter TV show is nothing short of enchanting. However, as someone who has witnessed the tumultuous journey of Hollywood and its stars, my anticipation is tempered with a dose of realism.
At the moment, HBO is making efforts to launch a new TV series based on the Harry Potter books. They are looking for young talents to portray Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and they might be aiming to recruit renowned English actor Mark Rylance to play Dumbledore. Their ambition is to bring all seven of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels to screen with the intricate details that the Harry Potter movies couldn’t fully capture.
The show is expected to span at least seven seasons, providing fans with plenty of entertainment for an extended period. However, it’s important to note that the actual episodes are not likely to air anytime in the near future. In discussions with journalists, HBO executive Casey Bloys hinted that we might not be able to watch the series until as late as 2027, but this is merely a speculation; he emphasized that this timeline is only an estimate and should not be taken as a definitive promise. The creators have a significant amount of work left before they can finalize a release date.
As I contemplate the future, I wonder how this upcoming Harry Potter series will unfold across the years. Given that the young talents chosen to portray Harry, Ron, and Hermione are aged 9-11 at the start, by the time the story reaches its climax in a magical boarding school, they could be well into their twenties – an interesting challenge since these characters are supposed to be high school seniors.
To avoid this issue, the producers are contemplating filming seasons one and two consecutively. They explained that the age difference of eleven to thirteen years is a significant milestone for children’s development, and they aim to reduce the chance that the actors might mature noticeably between seasons.
J.K. Rowing is “fairly involved” in the new Harry Potter show
To fans, this is all quite thrilling, but there’s an uncertainty: Over the past few years, J.K. Rowling herself has become a source of debate due to her controversial views on transgender individuals, which she has been strongly advocating for some time now. Things have escalated so much that she’s publicly sparring with actors from the films like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, and has even made statements that border on Holocaust denial. For someone who was once known as a champion of liberal views, this transformation has been rather shocking to observe.
Some fans are feeling apprehensive about Rowling’s role in the series, but according to Bloys, Rowling has played a part in selecting the writers and directors for the show. It is confirmed that Francesca Gardiner will be the showrunner, and Mark Mylod, who has experience from ‘Succession’ and ‘Game of Thrones’, will direct several episodes. Both seem fitting choices for the job. As Bloys mentioned, it is expected that Rowling may have her own thoughts on casting decisions. However, her involvement in the series hasn’t discouraged anyone from wanting to participate.
It’s unlikely they will announce J.K. Rowling’s role in the project, as she often finds herself embroiled in scandals every few months. If her contributions are confined to offering advice on internal hiring decisions, I don’t foresee significant negative impact visible on screen. Hopefully, the worst-case scenario won’t materialize – that is, the Harry Potter series starts off with Voldemort becoming a vocal advocate for trans rights, using his evil deeds to promote the acceptance of gender-neutral bathrooms. Fingers crossed that HBO will subtly guide the series away from such a scenario.
