HBO boss downplays George R.R. Martin's criticisms of House of the Dragon season 2

As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of all things Game of Thrones, I have to say that I’ve been following the drama surrounding House of the Dragon with a mix of excitement and trepidation. It’s not every day that the creator of the world we love so much voices his concerns about the very show that’s meant to expand it.

Recently, George R.R. Martin, the creator of “Game of Thrones,” openly expressed his criticisms regarding the second season of the prequel series “House of the Dragon.” On his blog, he voiced concerns about how the show is eliminating significant characters from the original source material in a manner that might impact future plot developments. He also suggested that there could be more substantial grievances to come.

Martin swiftly removed the blog post, leaving its contents a mystery. However, his actions caused quite a stir, leading HBO to attempt some form of damage control. Now, as fans, we are left with the discomforting knowledge that the author who penned the book for House of the Dragon seems to have significant issues with the series’ adaptation. It’s an awkward situation.

Casey Bloys, HBO’s CEO, played down Martin’s comments during his conversation with Deadline regarding HBO’s Emmy wins this past weekend. The second installment of House of the Dragon was not eligible for this year’s Emmys, but it will be next year. Deadline inquired about the show’s prospects, considering the fanbase is currently split over season 2.

In response to the question, Bloys clarified, “It’s possible not all fans agreed on Season 2, but it performed exceptionally well. I anticipate it will be a strong contender.” Here, Deadline was then referred to George R.R. Martin’s comments.

Is the House of the Dragon fanbase “divided”?

The second season of House of the Dragon received respectable ratings, though they weren’t as high as those for the first season. However, I believe that Bloys may be underestimating potential challenges ahead. For example, a significant number of fans rate episodes of House of the Dragon on IMDb. In the initial season, even the lowest-rated episode earned an 8.0/10, which is equivalent to a B-. However, in season 2, four episodes fell below that mark, with the season finale receiving a grade of 6.4/10, which translates to a D. This assessment comes from over 41,000 fans.

At WinterIsComing.net, we appreciated the second season, but encountered more challenges than the first. Unlike a casual fan, George R.R. Martin is not only a devotee; he’s the mastermind behind this universe and a highly acclaimed author. He seldom expressed such strong criticism during Game of Thrones’ run (based on his A Song of Ice and Fire book series), yet he criticized House of the Dragon just two seasons into it. It seems fitting to describe the fanbase as divided in this case.

Absolutely, Bloys was simply improvising his responses, so it’s unlikely we should overanalyze his words. In essence, he seems to continue supporting the creative team on “House of the Dragon,” which aligns with HBO’s typical approach – they tend to give their creatives a good deal of freedom. This is generally beneficial as it allows HBO shows to explore themes other networks shy away from. However, I can’t help but feel that HBO and “House of the Dragon” could benefit from heeding George R.R. Martin’s insights, given his intimate knowledge of the world. Additionally, I found several changes made for season 2 to be less than satisfying, and I believe the show would be stronger if it adhered more closely to the narrative outlined in “Fire & Blood.

It’ll be some time before we know for sure, but it looks like House of the Dragon season 3 will air on HBO and Max around 2026. In the interim, a new Game of Thrones prequel series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to debut next year. Martin seems particularly pleased with this one.
