Following the popularity of HBO’s House of the Dragon, work on the show’s fourth and final season was already in progress. However, production has recently encountered a significant problem.
Filming for Season 4 has been temporarily stopped in Gran Canaria, Spain, because of bad weather. Heavy winter rains caused water levels to rise significantly, flooding part of the set. Production will now move to mainland Spain. The recent rainfall caused the Las Niñas Dam to reach its highest level in 15 years, overflowing for the first time since then.
Raúl García Brink, the Environment Councilor for Gran Canaria, confirmed that the film production has been moved to mainland Spain. They had a contract to film in the area from February 23rd to May 15th. Now, the company needs to provide a plan to remove the remaining film set, some of which is underwater. A full environmental cleanup will take place as soon as the water level drops.
With a change in filming locations, the team behind House of the Dragon Season 4 will need to adjust their plans. They originally intended to film in a beautiful, high-elevation area of Gran Canaria, but that spot is no longer available. It’s currently unknown how much this will impact the season’s production, or if the story will need to be revised to fit the new location.
Before Season 3 began, it was announced that House of the Dragon would end after four seasons. Filming for Season 3 is now complete and it will premiere on HBO in June. However, Season 4 isn’t expected until 2028. If current production challenges are addressed quickly, the season is still aiming for a 2028 release on HBO.
