Have you ever pondered how a Broadway production of shows like “Hazbin Hotel” or “Helluva Boss,” popular animated series set in an imaginative and luxurious depiction of hell, might appear? Many fans of these beloved Amazon Prime Video shows, with their captivating songs and the Broadway-caliber talent involved, have likely considered this—given the amazing tunes that are a part of the shows.
TopMob joined discussions with fellow journalists at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), where the team behind “Hazbin Hotel” and “Helluva Boss” were present, sharing their perspectives on how these fictional universes might be adapted for Broadway performances.
Vivienne Medrano, the creator of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, expressed her desire for a collaboration in the future, admitting that discussions about it have taken place. She is enthusiastic about the potential opportunities and widespread interest, hoping to bring this project to fruition someday.
Erika Henningsen, who plays a role in Hazbin Hotel, mentioned that she prefers not to apply heavy makeup or face paint, as she has seen fellow Elphaba performers from Wicked still having traces of green paint hidden in various spots even months later.
In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, Amir Talai, the voice behind Alastar in “Hazbin Hotel”, shared an intriguing insight. He confessed that not only is it ‘madness’ to perform a song eight times a week, but also admitted he isn’t sure if he could sing any of the songs he has performed so far without taking extra breaths in between.
The participants in the roundtable discussion at San Diego Comic-Con, featuring characters from highly anticipated shows like “Hazbin Hotel” and “Helluva Boss,” included Vivienne Medrano (the creator), Erika Henningsen (Charlie), Amir Talai (Alastar), Brandon Rogers (Blitzo), Richard Horvitz (Moxxie, also the voice director).
In the same discussion, Medrano casually mentioned that Helluva Boss enthusiasts might have to endure a considerable length of time before they finally witness Season 3 being brought to reality.
What Could Hazbin Hotel (Or Helluva Boss) Look Like on Broadway?

“There’s So Much Interest That I Would Love, Love to Make That Happen One Day.”
- TopMob: What would Hazbin Hotel look like on Broadway? Can that happen one day?
Vivienne Medrano: To be honest, I truly hope it becomes a reality someday. I have plenty of ideas, considering Broadway is an entirely unique landscape. There’s both the practical aspect and the creative side to consider. With so many possibilities and such high interest, I genuinely wish to bring this dream to life one day. And let me be clear, there have certainly been discussions about it…
In the vast world we live in, I’ve come across numerous individuals associated with Broadway productions. This encounter has given me insights into the intricacies of creating a Broadway show, and I’ve even had the privilege of meeting some who have played pivotal roles in bringing these shows to life. Needless to say, it serves as a reminder that anything can be achieved with determination and passion.
Erika Henningson expressed her feelings about the expectations placed on women regarding makeup by saying, “It’s just so frustrating to be a woman because we feel pressured to wear makeup. I mean, it’s really annoying. The idea of putting on white face paint is just not appealing to me. I’ve seen Elphabas with green behind their ears for months after wearing it, and that made me think, ‘I don’t want to put on white face paint.’
It seems there could potentially be a stage adaptation of ‘Hazbin Hotel’, though it may be some time before that happens. Perhaps similar to the Harry Potter HBO series, where they’ve allowed Daniel Radcliffe to step back and brought in a new cast, but this is something that might occur in the future, not immediately.
But we would love to sing the music live. That is something that we do enjoy.
Amir Talai: I’m not sure if I could perform any of the songs I’ve sung before without needing extra breaths, is that correct? That’s because they’re so swiftly paced. It’s incredibly quick. It’s so quick that in the recording studio, we divide it into sections since it’s almost impossible to get every single word out cleanly.
To be honest, performing that eight times a week is just beyond my capabilities. From a musical standpoint, parts of it need to be tweaked or rewritten altogether. As for transforming into a demon on stage, I’m not sure how that would even be possible.
The stars of “Helluva Boss,” Brandon Rogers and Richard Horvitz, shared their ideas about how their series from the Hellaverse could be adapted for a live stage production.
Brandon Rogers: By the finale, spectators might find themselves drenched in blood, an aspect we particularly enjoy due to our background on the stage. Regardless of what roles we may assume later in our careers, whether it’s screen acting or voice acting, we will always be stage enthusiasts at heart. It’s a part of who we are.
The majority of ‘Hazbin’ cast members are true thespians at heart; it seems as if we’re having a theatrical slumber party whenever we’re together. This sensation is not far off, as they often put us in the same hotel and provide us with alcohol, jokingly telling us not to misbehave.
Richard Horvitz: I’d really enjoy seeing that. I’d really enjoy it. Richard Horvitz: I could attend without a second thought, but eight shows per week is your unwavering commitment. At 38, I think I might manage a six-week run, no problem. But remember, it’s your decision to make.

In New York two years ago, I attended ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ where Bryce Pinkham performed. Afterward, I waited for him, and when I did, he mentioned he needed to catch the train back to New Jersey since it was the last one. So, I said goodbye. Interestingly, I bumped into him on a Zoom call the next morning, as he had just woken up in LA and had to finish our meeting before heading off to perform at the show. I’d love another chance to work with him.
