The newest episode of Hazbin Hotel Season 2 revealed that Charlie Morningstar’s father, Lucifer—who rules Hell—is unable to harm those who have sinned. However, the episode didn’t explain why this is the case. Throughout Season 1 of Hazbin Hotel and continuing into Season 2, Lucifer (voiced by Jeremy Jordan) has been a significant figure. As both the ruler of Hell and Lilith’s estranged husband—a key character this season—he’s shown a change in attitude towards his daughter Charlie’s efforts to redeem sinners.
I was so surprised at the end of Season 1 when Lucifer decided to live at the Hazbin Hotel with Charlie! It’s amazing to see him trying to help her give demons a chance at redemption. Honestly, we’d always seen him as this unbelievably powerful, intimidating figure, but it turns out there’s a lot more to him than meets the eye.

In Season 2, Episode 5, it’s revealed that Lucifer can’t hurt other sinners. This comes to light when Vaggie asks him to kill Vox, a major antagonist this season. When pressed about potentially killing the powerful demon, Lucifer explains he’s unable to do so.
“Hell isn’t just a location, it’s a form of punishment, and my personal torment is being trapped here with all these sinners,” explained the ruler of Hell, adding another layer of sadness to the story of Hazbin Hotel.
It’s not simply a location; it’s a form of punishment. My sentence is being trapped here with these people, and I’m powerless to change their fate or even interact with them, so I’m forced to simply overlook their presence.
Season 2 of the popular animated series Hazbin Hotel is available now on Amazon Prime Video. New episodes will be released every Wednesday until November 19th.
Why Can’t Lucifer Hurt Vox and Sinners In Hazbin Hotel?
Within the world of Hazbin Hotel, Lucifer only explains to Vaggie why he can’t harm sinners. He was punished as a sinner himself, and now he’s stuck living with others, unable to escape his awful situation. But there might be more to it than just that.
Giving this character the power to seriously injure or kill the demons he governs would make him seem too strong for the world of Hazbin Hotel. A key strength of the show’s unique take on Heaven and Hell is that every character, regardless of their power, has some kind of vulnerability.

Lucifer’s biggest limitation, despite being the ruler of Hell, is his inability to physically control those who cause trouble. Even with his powerful angelic abilities, he can’t simply reshape the Hellaverse or dominate everyone below him.
After Episode 5 aired, series creator Vivienne Medrano (known as Vivziepop) responded to fan concerns on BlueSky. When asked about why Lucifer seemed less powerful, she explained that she hadn’t weakened him, but rather given him significant limitations.
We didn’t actually weaken him! We just added some significant restrictions to his abilities. He remains incredibly strong, though, and is still a top-tier character!
This weakness ironically mirrors the character’s history. According to the story of Hazbin Hotel, Lucifer originally granted humanity the gift of free will.
It’s ironic that he’s now forced to live with the results of his actions, trapped in Hell with the worst of humanity and no hope of fixing things.
