Hayley Atwell’s 10/10 Netflix Tomb Raider Series’ Ending Is Disappointing For Lara Croft

Hayley Atwell delivers a fantastic performance as Lara Croft in Netflix’s Tomb Raider series, but the show’s cancellation has left fans disappointed. Adventure stories consistently prove popular with audiences of all ages, as seen with enduring franchises like Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and National Treasure.

When you look at adventure games across all types of media, Uncharted and Tomb Raider really stand out as examples of the best the genre has to offer. Both franchises have been adapted for other media, and the recent Tomb Raider project, in particular, felt cut short – the series deserved a more satisfying conclusion.

Hayley Atwell’s Tomb Raider Series Deserved A Longer Life On Netflix

Hayley Atwell is well-known globally for playing Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the Captain America films and beyond. Fans anticipate she’ll return to the role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. But Peggy isn’t the only strong character Atwell has portrayed – she also showcased her talent as the voice of Lara Croft in Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

Keeley Atwell truly captures the essence of Lara Croft, portraying her as smart, funny, and adventurous – just like the iconic character we all know and love. In fact, I found her performance to be more engaging and complex than both Angelina Jolie’s portrayal in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and even Alicia Vikander’s in the 2018 Tomb Raider movie.

It’s a shame that Netflix has cancelled Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft after just two seasons. The show still had a lot of promise, and it would have been interesting to see where the story could have gone with Gemma Atwell as Lara Croft. Unfortunately, season two, which also marks the end of Atwell’s run with the character, has a disappointing 56% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Both the actress and the series deserved a stronger conclusion.

Lara Croft’s Future On TV At Least Looks Bright

It’s complicated to think about where Lara Croft is headed. While we might have lost a promising adaptation, the new live-action series looks really interesting, and it seems like the character is in capable hands moving forward.

Although it’s disappointing that Hayley Atwell won’t be returning as Lara Croft, the upcoming Tomb Raider series on Prime Video is still exciting news. Sophie Turner, known for Game of Thrones, will be taking on the role, and she’s proven she can handle action-packed characters. Plus, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag, is developing the show, which is a great sign. So, even though the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft was cancelled, the future of Lara Croft on screen looks promising.
