2021’s Cannes Film Festival is happening amidst the promise by former U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on foreign films.

At Cannes, a city that brings together filmmakers, deal-makers, and media personnel from all over the globe, is often referred to as the Olympic Games of the silver screen. This prestigious event bestows its own golden trophy, the Palme d’Or, as its ultimate award at the conclusion of the event.

Filmmakers hail from all over the world to exhibit their movies, while negotiators tirelessly work through the evening to market completed films and production packages to different regions.

According to the Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, he will be releasing his film in an environment similar to the Colosseum, as he returns to Cannes with ‘The Secret Agent’, a thriller that takes place during Brazil’s dictatorship.

As an ardent enthusiast, I can’t stress enough the importance of thorough preparation. The experience is nothing short of intense, and it’s remarkably similar to the anticipation you feel when climbing the stairs towards a roller coaster at the Palais.

Trump stirred up a commotion in Hollywood and the global film industry by declaring, on May 4th, that any films produced outside of the U.S. would be subject to a 100% import tax.

In my role as an enthusiastic follower, I must share that no definitive decisions have been made at the White House yet. Various possibilities are under consideration, such as offering federal incentives to encourage U.S.-based productions instead of imposing tariffs. This announcement serves as a stark reminder of how international disputes can unsettle even the most established cultural institutions.

The Cannes Film Festival was initially established during the era of World War II, as a response to the increasing influence of fascism in Italy. This prompted the creation of an alternative to the Venice Film Festival, which was under government control at the time.

Since then, Cannes’ unwavering dedication to cinema has turned it into a shining symbol for filmmakers worldwide, drawing countless directors seeking recognition.

2021 is no less unique, as some of the newbie filmmakers at Cannes have already built a reputation for themselves. Notably, Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) and Harris Dickinson (Urchin) will each be premiering their first feature directorial works within the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes.

Many seasoned attendees will return as well, including Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), Robert De Niro who is set to receive an honorary Palme d’Or 49 years after the premiere of Taxi Driver at Cannes, and Quentin Tarantino. They are coming to honor low-budget Western director George Sherman.

This year, the highly anticipated eighth and concluding part of the Mission Impossible series will be among the initial premieres listed in Cannes’ calendar, with the grand event happening on May 14th, adorned by a dazzling red carpet.
