Hayden Panettiere was spotted using crutches to get around at LAX airport, accompanied by her sometimes-partner, Brian Hickerson, who has a criminal conviction.
Throughout their difficult relationship, Hickerson was accused of domestic violence, and in 2021, he spent 13 days in jail after injuring her.
They announced their breakup in July 2022, but starting in November of that year, people spotted them together often, leading to speculation they were getting back together.
In an April 2023 interview, Panettiere suggested she might have reconciled with Hickerson, but didn’t directly confirm it.
This week marked the first time the pair has been seen together in public since they were spotted at an airport in August 2023.
In a video obtained by the Daily Mail, 36-year-old Panettiere explained she was using crutches because of pinched nerves in her lower back.
She mentioned she was recovering, offering a smile and a thumbs-up as she got into a black SUV waiting outside the airport.
The Daily Mail has contacted her representatives for further comment.
In an April 2023 interview with the New York Times, Panettiere spoke carefully about the possibility of getting back together with Hickerson.
She shared that they reconnected as friends while both working on getting sober, but emphasized their friendship depended on him staying committed to his recovery.
During the interview, Hickerson was at home and, while referring to her ex as ‘babe,’ avoided confirming whether they had reconciled. She admitted, ‘There are feelings there,’ but didn’t offer a definitive answer.
Panettiere emphasized that letting him back into her life was a serious decision she didn’t make easily. Regarding his time in jail, she stated he understood he deserved the consequences he faced.
In 2018, while battling addiction to alcohol and opioids and recently after ending her relationship with Ukrainian boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko – with whom she shares an 11-year-old daughter named Kaya – she began a relationship with Hickerson.
In 2019, Hickerson was initially accused of domestic violence against Panettiere. Although Panettiere obtained a protective order, the charges were later dismissed.
He was arrested for domestic violence again on Valentine’s Day in 2020. According to TMZ, police reported that he punched Hayden Panettiere in the face with a closed fist.
After the arrest, Panettiere stated she was sharing her experience to help others in abusive relationships seek support and healing. She also expressed her commitment to ensuring the abuser doesn’t harm anyone else.
Hickerson was initially charged with eight crimes, but ultimately pleaded no contest to two felony counts of domestic violence.
In April 2021, he received a 45-day jail sentence and served 13 days in May. He was also ordered to pay a $500 fine and remains on probation.
In July 2022, Hickerson stated that he and Panettiere were simply friends and were no longer in a romantic relationship.
People reported that Panettiere had expressed a desire to forgive Hickerson, and her comments were made soon after she shared that sentiment.
She was clear that abuse is never acceptable. However, she also expressed willingness to forgive those who take responsibility and seek help to change. She noted that the individual in question has already started this process by attending treatment and serving any required consequences.
In March 2023, Hickerson supported Panettiere at a memorial service for her brother, Jansen, who had passed away unexpectedly at age 28. He was found dead in his apartment the previous February, and the cause was determined to be an enlarged heart and issues with his aortic valve that hadn’t been diagnosed.
The next year, people began to speculate that she had relapsed into substance abuse after she spoke with difficulty in an interview discussing her brother’s passing.
Her team addressed concerns about her condition, stating that speaking publicly about her brother for the first time was deeply emotional and followed a long, tiring day. They confirmed she was not under the influence of any substances, according to Page Six.
Hayden Panettiere has announced her memoir, titled ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning,’ will be released on May 19th.
