Hawkeye Producer Admits the Issue With Season 1 Behind the Scenes

Despite becoming a popular Marvel series on Disney+, Hawkeye didn’t have an easy path to release. Writer Brad Ingelsby recently shared the challenges the show, starring Jeremy Renner, faced during its production to finally premiere in 2021. As the fourth MCU show on Disney+, it overcame several hurdles to become the fan favorite it is today.

Andrew Guest, the creator of Marvel’s new Disney+ series Wonder Man, previously worked as a key writer on Hawkeye. In an interview with the Official Marvel Podcast, Guest explained that his work on Hawkeye helped him land the Wonder Man job. He also shared that his connection with the Russo Brothers – who recommended him to Marvel’s leadership – was instrumental in getting him involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A guest speaker shared that he received a call from Marvel Studios executive Trinh Tran about the show Hawkeye. She told him they wanted to completely rewrite the series just a week and a half before they were scheduled to start filming in New York.

Trinh called and told me they were starting to film Hawkeye in New York in about a week and a half, but wanted to completely rewrite the script. She said she’d send me six episodes that day, and we’d meet the next day to talk it over.

The writer finalized an agreement after meeting with Tran and Brad Winderbaum, who leads streaming, TV, and animation at Marvel. He then immediately began working remotely, constantly sending them material while simultaneously filming Hawkeye.

The following day, I met with her and Brad to discuss what was and wasn’t going well with the project. They were on board with my assessment, and we finalized the agreement that same night. As filming began, I immediately started working remotely around the clock, continuously providing them with updates and materials.

Even though the project moved quickly, Guest described working on Hawkeye as a fantastic way to start with Marvel. He said the team really bonded and worked closely together.

It was a fantastic way to start working with Marvel, because I really relied on their guidance. We all worked closely together, supporting each other throughout the process. The Marvel producers were very involved, and I appreciated their help as we created a show we were all proud of.

Marvel Studios often works with tight deadlines and isn’t afraid to make changes on the fly. It’s well-known that many of their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films are shot even before the script is fully finished, with stories often taking shape during extensive reshoots.

It appears that Hawkeye was saved by a last-minute creative change. When Alaqua Cox was cast, the show’s scripts had to be completely rewritten while production was already underway. Though rewriting six episodes on the fly was undoubtedly stressful, Marvel Studios recognized the show wasn’t quite working and the changes ultimately resulted in a stronger final product.

Hawkeye, starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, follows Kate Bishop and Clint Barton on a Christmas-time adventure in New York City, where they face off against enemies Clint made while operating as the vigilante Ronin. The show debuted on November 24, 2021, and quickly became a critically acclaimed Marvel series, earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Does Hawkeye’s Past Jeopardize Its Season 2 Future?

Even though the first season of Hawkeye had some problems, it was still a hit with viewers. Because of this, many fans have been hoping for a second season, but the Disney+ series has encountered difficulties getting one made.

Jeremy Renner, known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has publicly expressed his desire for a second season of the Hawkeye series. However, he also revealed a disagreement with Marvel regarding payment, which could prevent the show from continuing.

Recently, Andrew Guest explained to TopMob why a second season of Hawkeye didn’t happen, stating simply, “the timing didn’t work out.”

We definitely discussed ideas for a second season of ‘Hawkeye’ and what it could look like. Ultimately, it just didn’t align with Marvel’s plans and scheduling. I really enjoyed working on the show, though, and I think Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld have great chemistry – I’d love to see them team up again.

Despite the lack of official news, people have been talking since 2021 about the possibility of a second season of Hawkeye. If it happens, it would be rare, as very few of the Marvel shows on Disney+ have gotten renewed for another season.

Despite the challenges, a continuation would be valuable. Both Clint Barton and Kate Bishop are fan favorites, and Steinfeld’s character, Kate Bishop, has a promising future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially benefiting from a follow-up series to explore her story further.
